The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

I’m stumped on this one. So with no support and just a guess, I’ll say Bob Burman and most likely with his mechanician Howard Hale during the 1910 VCRaces.

Thank YOU, Frank; you’re very welcome. Many of the 2,200 missing images on my site are old LIMP pix; if I ever manage to extract them from old hard drives and JAZ cartridges, we’ll have a field day! Sam, III

Mystery Foto #39, Correction…
This is to correct a typo in the answer I sent in an earlier comment. Next to last sentence should read…
“I believe that this is the 1906 race because Wagner had other mechanicians when he competed in 1905 and other years of the cup race.”

This is like trying to identify The Lone Ranger with his mask on but I’ll try to connect the dots anyway. Since this photo is from the Helck collection, and since Peter Helck did some artwork picturing the 1906 V.C. Races, which driver/mechanician pair had decent moustaches in 1906? I’m guessing Gustave Caillois and Marcel Pouxe who were part of the Thomas Flyer team. Maybe the photo was taken on the grounds of Krug’s Hotel in Mineola, which was the Thomas Flyer headquarters.

Dunno about the clown in the duster with a fake mustache but that masked man in the rubber poncho is clearly Christopher Reeve - er, I mean Willie K. - look at that hairdo! Antique car afficionadoes (not I) should easily identify the car by that odd lever in the foreground. These blog posts so enliven Sunday afternoons (even with that strange, low, green thing somehow named for Australian bushfood)! :·) Sam, III

To Dick and Gary, those taxis at the Rockville Centre Yellow Cab Co. are 1921 Yellow taxi cabs, manufactured by Yellow Taxi Co. A John R. Hertz Co. until 1925. If you go on Google Search, ‘1921 Yellow Taxi’, You’ll will see lots of taxi photos, one or two will be the same identical model shown in the Rockville Centre Taxi photo posted by Dick. The other recent color photos shown are later ‘22/‘23 or later, the ‘21 has a sloping cowl area to the hood, a 1920 model has spoke wheels.

Howard,
It’s amazing that those Mustang photos are still around . Usually, things like that have a way of disappearing. Thanks for sharing them with us. BEAUTIFUL!

Welcome to the club, Michael. If you look at my above-noted page (http://sbiii.com/limpobvr.html), you’ll see a sketch map roughly depicting the area in green. Yes, the area, OBVR (Old Bethpage Village Restoration), where the bridge is located, is fenced in, but it is a Nassau County public park; normal entry is through a well-marked, landscaped entrance (see attached) on the east side of Round Swamp Road, roughly half way between the LI Expressway and Spagnoli Road. There is an admission fee (well worth it!). Have a ball! Sam, III

Absolutely Tom, warmth no doubt was considered luxury then in the NE, New England states, even in taxi cabs transporting the populace. On the other side, the A/C during the warmer months would not appear until much later. This lodge never experienced A/C luxuries but it could have if still standing today. Still wishing it was preserved and still standing.

Mystery Foto #39… The driver is Louis Wagner and the mecanician is Victor Demogeot. The car is a 1906 Darracq in which Wagner and Demogeot won the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup race. Photo taken in 1906 at the Hotel Glenwood (headquarters for the Darracq team) in Glenwood Landing. I believe that this is the 1906 race because Wagner had different mecanicians in the other races in which he competed.
Below see Darracq poster and the race car as she looks present day.

Hello, I’m new here. I’ve had great interest in the LIMP recently and because I live in Farmingdale, this is not too far from me. I’ve been using google street view to look at the surrounding areas, but it looks fenced off. Does visiting this location require trespassing onto private property, or am I missing something? Any response appreciated, thank you.
