I don’t know what lodge it is. However, it was being transported westbound on Old Country Rd. to 7th St. in Garden City just east of Franklin Ave where, I think, it was intended to be used as an exhibit. From what I remember, the move occurred in the mid-‘80s. What I think is ironic about the location of the photo is that it is where the Motor Parkway’s north/south roadway passed either over or under what was then a narrow Old Country Rd.

I was 10 years old in 1958 and rode my bike on the Vanderbilt Pkwy more times than I can remember. The LIE was under construction through Fresh Meadows at the time. and the Clearview Xway was not yet being constructed south of its interchange w/the LIE. As can be noticed in the photos, nothing was done to keep the right of way clear.  Rather, it merely was a remnant of a world gone by. All I knew at the time from word of mouth that it was an abandoned roadway. Notice, also, that the Grand Central Pkway was the original parkway; reconstruction of this section did not start until 1971, from what I remember. And notice, too, the cars. Although they were death traps, weren’t they beautiful?

This is the Garden City Toll Lodge, being moved in 1977 from its original location on Huntington Road in GC (on the LIMP ROW) to its current location on Seventh Street, GC. The photos are from the north heading south

My .02 on the possible location. My thought is the Meadowbrook bridge looking North. The telephone poles for me match in all angles and heights and locations. Some of my other observations are the fence for the property and the roofline of the house. There is fencing in the race photos and I drew a crude line on the mystery photo and what I think matches the 1926 aerial. While the resolution is tough, It appears that the roofline could be a match by the peaks pointed to in the 2 photos.

Garden City Lodge. Mar. 13, 1989. The lodge was being relocated from its original location off Clinton Road to its new location at 230 Seventh Street, where it is the headquarters of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

Looks like Franklin Avenue, because it’s a busy, multilane, undivided highway. If the lodge took the shortest route, the photographer is facing south.

Irony of the location? No clue.

-Identify the Motor Parkway Lodge

Garden City Lodge

-What was the date of the Mystery Foto?

March 19, 1989

-Where was the lodge headed?

It’s new home as the Garden City Chamber of Commerce at 230 7th St.

-Identify the exact location of the photo and orientation of the photographer.

Standing on the corner of Old Country Road and Laurel Street across from the Eagle Rock apartments looking west down OCR.

-What is ironic about this location?

A LIMP lodge traveling down Old Country Road which was labeled as the route to the grandstands for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race map, and just about the exact spot where the Old Country Road LIMP bridge are both pretty ironic!

I think it’s the Garden City lodge located on Clinton Rd.It was moved 3/19/1989 to its new location on 7th street in Garden City. The lodge is headed west pass the Fairhaven Apartments on Old County Rd. It ironically crosses path of the Motor Parkway and Old County Rd in Mineola now called Vanderbilt Drive N.

This replicas story leaves a bad taste in my mouth. we donated that car once thinking thats where it would stay and the present directors sold it against our wishes. I worked hard to make that museum a success and now its a joke. Preston, my father, Frank Tucker and many others were let down by this sale. Ypsilanti’s Automotive Heritage is the loser here. Eric and Ron are no friends of this Tucker.

It’s at $16,000 with one day to go. I’ll say $20,000. It can’t be worth more than that.

Frank, This might help. Note that the guard rail on the driver side in the mystery photo is curved at the end while on the passenger side the guardrail is straight and extends past the opposite curved rail.  In the accompanying photos of the Bellmore/Westbury bridge area, both guard rails east of the bridge are curved and of the same length while in the photos of the race cars on the northside the Central Ave./Central RR.. bridge, the guard rails are straighter and the one on the vehicle passenger side is longer….just like in the mystery photo.

Al, I’m keeping all options open and still consider the Central Ave bridge in Bethpage a prime candidate. Tricky mystery.
