Robert-
I grew up in Great Neck and know that story well. I also recall seeing more than a few photos of the Klan on Steamboat Rd, but couldn’t locate them online (our house was just down the block from Steamboat)

First, thanks for all the additional material on, especially, KKK activity in Queens.

And, to David Stephan: I look forward to your research on LIMP ROW and railroad development and speculation. One of the subjects of my research is S. Osgood Pell, whose Fifth Avenue real estate company had branches in Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau between 1899 and 1913, when he died tragically. Pell was often described as a real estate speculator. He had an estate in Wheatley Hills that is now a part of the LIU Post campus. His firm S. Osgood Pell & Co. survived him. Pell was a good friend of Willie K and was out to dinner with him the night Pell was killed.

From Mystery Foto #45 Solved: The Vanderbilt Family Cemetery and Mausoleum in Staten Island

Nov 05 2021 Greg O. 8:20 AM

The Vanderbilt family mausoleum in the Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island.  The cemetery and Mausoleum sits on the eastern slope of Todt Hill, in the New Dorp section of S.I. It is the final resting place for Willie K. Jr. and 27 other Vanderbilt family members that are entombed there, with 2 memorialized on crypts.
The Vanderbilt Mausoleum was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and constructed between 1884 and 1886. it has 125 Interment Spaces, Only 28 Vanderbilt family members are entombed here, and 2 memorialized on crypts.
The grounds of the cemetery and around the mausoleum were designed and created by Frederick Law Olmstead, who designed Central Park.

I think Willie K Jr. could have had something to do with the Vanderbilt Cup Races but I’m not too sure.

Over Roosevelt Airfield looking west (I can see Lindbergh’s hangar 16). Old Country Rd at extreme right, Clinton Rd running diagonal across the bottom of photo, From the left: Camp Mills Base Hopital’s East Main St/East New York St (Chestnut St)/East Commercial Av (Commercial Av)/CRR/Stewart Av. Cannot see LIMP structures but….. present in the photo is the Old Country Rd highway bridge underpass, Mayan Ruins proposed bridge, Clinton Rd parkway bridge, Superintendent’s house at 1 Vanderbilt Ct, and Garden City lodge - moved in 1989 to 7th St and now serves as the Garden City Chamber of Commerce, Camp Mills Base hospital roadways, west of Clinton Rd, also appear clear and still in use. The structures however appear removed; the clouds make viewing challenging. Photo’s date close to 1920(s) with Camp Mills Base hospital possibly removed.

Thank you Bill Bellmer for the challenging photo!

Walter Travis was not only the leading amatuer golfer as Al notes, but he was a golf course designer. That map reference seems to be to the Garden City Golf Club course that Travis redesigned to much acclaim to host the U.S. Open in 1908 (and later, again, in 1913) and which still exists today.

Art, looking forward to your future post my own research, which I hope to publish next year, suggestions for or proposals about the Motor Pkwy ROW were often feints to affect railroad development and ownership or to support land speculation and development. In a manner of speaking, there was a purpose behind those purposes!

Thank you for continuing to share these jewels from
The Helck Archives.  And for all of the others adding to it with their comments.
I recall Jerry Helck stating that the other Loco that raced in the V Cup in ‘08 was pushed off a pier in Bridgeport by the factory.  Maybe we should check the water.

Garden City, looking west.
Old Country Road, Clinton Road, LI Motor Parkway, Stewart Avenue.
Clinton Road Bridge, Old Country Road Highway Bridge, Garden City Lodge, Superintendent’s first office.
approx. 1918.  No homes built. Intercollegiate Golf Club not built yet.
Curtiss Jenny (possibly the “H” model being tested as there seems to be an “H” on the nose and there is no ID number that I can see.  The “H” model came out in 1918.  (To be honest I saw Curtiss Jenny noted on a comment that was opened, but not the H).

Happy Halloween!

We are looking west over East Garden City over today’s Roosevelt Field shopping mall. Major roads include the LIMP, Clinton Road, Old Country Road, Stewart Avenue and Commercial Avenue. LIMP structures include bridges over Clinton Road and under Old Country Road; also the Garden City Lodge and superintendent’s office. I think the plane is a Curtiss JN-6 “Jenny”. Based on what appear to be then current US Army Air Corps markings on the plane, I’ll date the photo around 1922.

The Stoddard Dayton photographed in this post is not a 1911. It’s either a 1909 or 1908 Stoddard Dayton. Starting in 1910 Stoddard Dayton went from elliptical rear springs to 3/4 elliptical springs also the rear fenders on the 09/ 08 Stoddard Dayton’s were flat (pancake) style. Starting in 1910 they were rounded over the rear tire. It would be interesting to see if the engine.
I attached 2 pics of my 1909 Stoddard Model F 45Hp and you can see the springs. Note the spring hangers are backwards on the white one. The red Stoddard is my 1910 50hp you can see the fenders are rounded.

Greg, Prior to the adaption of the steam engine for automotive use, one needed a “license” to operate one. So…. some municipal jurisdictions required a license to operate a vehicle so equipped.  Remember reading somewhere Willie K. got a license from Westchester County early on. It was said because the County police would wait for Willie on his trips between NYC and Newport.

Art, Walter Travis was the Bobby Jones of golf around the turn of the 20th century. Never tuned professional, died sometime in the late 1920’s

I see that on the floor plan it notes they will have a research library. What will be the extent/depth of the library? and what years will it encompass? Will it be devoted to just vehicles made in the USA and will it include cars as well as commercial vehicles? Who will be the head of the library and what are their qualifications?
I am curious , as I have been ( still am) active in researching automotive history and am an author as well as a member of the Society of Automotive Historians ( was granted a Complimentary membership in 2019 )  and was a former Vice President, National Director, and Editor of their publications .
This is the first I see mention of this new facility.

My Mom, who was born in Great Neck spoke of a KKK Cross Burning on Steamboat Rd. in the late 20’s about 100 yds from her home. Scared the life out of her as she was 10 yrs old. Steamboat Rd was inhabited by a lot of Eastern European Catholics and Southern Blacks. There’s a notation about it in the Hofstra archives somewhere.
