Brian-
The narrow sections you mention are the part of the bikeway that are west of the Clearview in Cunningham Park and do not follow the original ROW in the Park. They will most likely remain as such. It seems that anything that was the original ROW east of the Clearview has been paved to its original width from concrete extension to extension.

What a great improvement. Thank you, I can’t wait to ride this.

Nice captures, Frank. Some of the path seems rather narrow. But maybe they haven’t finished paving yet in those areas.

#3 - Believe this is viewing north on the LIMP, then curves east under the Plainview Rd HWY Bridge in Bethpage. #5 - This view is similar to the Mystery Foto, but I believe this viewing west on the LIMP, with the PKWY Bridge over Wantagh Ave. #6 - Purely a guess, but this may be viewing west on the LIMP, between the Bloomingdale Rd HWY Bridge and the Wantagh Ave PKWY Bridge, with the auto heading east.

I would definitely be interested in more info on the other postcards. Obvioulsy a couple are very obvious, but some are not.

Aldo-
Look for the next post in the series. It will detail the 1920’s Rumpler Tropfenwagen.

Tropfenwagen in German translates to Teardrop Car.

Could be looking west with the Newbridge Road bridge in the distance. The trees look like those near the Newbridge Hotel. Another possible structure is the fencing for the parking lot for spectators of the 1908 V. C. Race. Date is probably October 24, 1908. The style of the card is similar to the set of 12 Locomobile cards but I don’t think that’s correct.

I bought this Poster / Lobby Card several years ago from Jacques Vaucher, l’art et l’automobile <[email protected]>.  He used to have a shop in East Hampton and now in the Texas hill Country.  It appears to be a mock up or the original for a poster. The edges are painted but the lettering is cutout and pasted in place.  I’ve looked for years for a copy of the actual poster.  I’d be interested to know what you can tell me about it.  I’ve met Howard at a few shows with the Tucker.

The question begs the answer, “who is in the car behind the workers?”. Has to be Willie K….

Here’s #21 on the Clark auction list - 1910 Stanley Model 60 #5440.  After a recent mechanical recommissioning, it’s again being driven.

Thanks for the comment, gents!  And Eric, you are correct.  The ROW would have been directly next to the offices today of NY Community Bank further north of my line.  Actually I believe the ramp leading to the back of the building is actually the roadway.  Here’s an updated pic where I believe the Motor Parkway is approx. located.

Some bits and pieces from that stretch grace our Floral Park backyard, saved by my son Gram during our years exploring the roadway.

I think your line of the ROW through Eisenhower Park is about 100 yards more south than it should be. The entrance of the Meadowbrook Lodge would have been more north of this line and matches more closely to the path running through the present-day golf course.

The idea of the side “wings” could have been taken from the 1924 Sport version of the German Grand Prix “Tropfenwagen” RH Benz of 1924 (see photo). The car was built for the 1923 Italian Grand Prix and was unusual due to the rear (middle) engine and the aerodynamic shape. Aerodynamics as was known at the time.
The “wings” on the Forostvosky car don’t provide any downforce effect even though they have an inverted wing profile.

Could be Aero inspired like the Voisin.

There is no accounting for taste. Forostovsky misunderstood both the function of fenders and aerodynamics, not to mention aesthetics. This misunderstanding is recurrent, witness the blob in the breeze treatments of the late thirties and their resurgence with the aid and abetttment of Jack Telnack at the Ford school of colon flow styling in the 1990s.

My best guess is that the photographer is on the north side of the Motor Parkway facing east, just west of the Wantagh avenue bridge that is in the distance.  The kid in the picture is looking west to what I would assume would be oncoming racers.  We also just barely might be able to make out the top of the Massapequa lodge in the distance to the left of the bridge.  This is probably the 1908 VCR held on October 24th but I’m not really sure about that.  I’m mostly curious about where this picture was taken.

Even the modified Levitt homes of today are much different than these new homes. What’s done is done, but these newer homes along this stretch won’t ever look right here. One thing is for sure, the photos on the signs aren’t William Levitt. Must be someone of note.
