Always like when you post about this time period, Art. The main roads were about the width of my driveway back then, 20 ft. Remember your coverage of the Westbury Ave or Rd Pkwy Bridge, which hung around until the mid 1950’s.

How about 1 of the 2 bridges bringing the Motor Parkway over the Northern State Parkway.  I’m guessing this is the one nearest New Hyde Park Rd. based on the landscape and curve of the road and telephone pole.  And I don’t see (however, I may be missing it) the Lakeville Rd. bridge over the NSP which would be very close.

Mid-1930s based on car designs and the bridge looking in good shape.

You’re likely correct Al, utilizing Marcus Av east as a temporary road back towards the LIMP during NSP construction. The temporary entrance ramp SE of the NHP Road bridge is wonderous. There must be documentation of it somewhere.

Lots of fascinating cars that if they exist are seldom seen in public.  For those of us who got to Long Island after this museum went away, we really appreciate learning about it.

Judging by the style of the bridge, it is one of three bridges built by Robert Moses to allow the LIMP to go over his NYS parkways. BUT, which one? Can’t be over Wantagh Parkway: too many trees. Can’t be just west of Lakeville Road: where’s Lakeville Road?  Therefore, it must be a short distance east of Lakeville Road in North Hills / North New Hyde Park, having been built during the 1931 construction of the Northern State Parkway. Based on the cars in the photos, I’m guessing the first three photos date from around 1933 while the last photo could be about 1940. The bridge was taken down during the major widening of the NSP, 1967-1968.

LIMP over NSP just west of New Hyde Park Road.  I would say all pictures face west.  As the right side of the picture is on the downward slope.  The way I would envision it.  These pictures are a wonderful find.  The cars look old enough for me to think this is about 1930.  The snowy picture looks like the cameraman was perhaps on the NHP Road Bridge over the NSP.  Bridge built by R Moses.  Best of my knowledge torn down in 1969 with the widening of the NSP.

It looks like the eastern bridge of the Motor Parkway over the Northern State Parkway in New Hyde Park. Rationale: The design of the bridge, which looks like other bridges in the Long Island parkway system, and other photos on this site. Built by the state in 1931 with the construction of the NSP. Torn down in 1967. Date: Various dates in the early ‘30s; pictures taken during all seasons.

YES!  As kids in the early to mid 60’s we just called it “The Sump”.  It was always dry.  In the Winter we would sneak in and ride our sleds down the slopes of the sump.  For whatever reason the sump was littered with garbage and as it got dark early in the Winter and as we would ride our sleds in the dark, the sled rails would run over old tin cans and make sparks.  You’d see sparks all down the side of the sump as kids were sleigh riding,

Just saw this page on 8.22.23
If the photo was taken in 1966 that was the year I was in Mr. Steve Schmidt’s 2nd grade class at Pintal Lane Elementary.  I had Mrs. Schermer (sp?) for 1st grade.  She was Mr. Schmidt’s sister as I recall.  Mrs. Benanti for Kindergarten.
The school had no cafeteria so you either brown bagged it or walked home for lunch then back to school.  Many days I would walk to school, walk home for lunch, walk back to school then walk home at the end of the day.  LOVED that school.  Had a big crush on Pintal Lane Elementary classmate Paula Katz if she is reading this!

Good work guys. Would appreciate input regarding Motor Parkway detours during the construction of the Northern State Parkway in this area. I assume that eastbound Motor Parkway traffic had to exit at Marcus Ave. and take that road to New Hyde Park Rd. head north and access the Motor Parkway via a temporary entrance built on the south east side of New Hyde Park Rd.  Other thoughts ?

This is Northern State Pkwy under construction, around 1932 in Lake Success. Robert Moses agreed to bridge the LIMP just southwest of New Hyde Park Rd, being that the roadway was being severed. That bridge is seen in this aerial. Unfortunate that there’s so much tree cover at the LIMP Bridge over New Hyde Park Rd. Would’ve been the best known image of the bridge as of yet. That’s the Links Golf Course between IU Willets Rd and the LIMP.

Road being constructed is the Northern State Parkway.  I.U. Willets Road borders the northern edge (top) of the golf course.  The Motor Parkway borders the southern edge (bottom).  New Hyde Park Road is the road on the left of the picture with the bridge being constructed.

Early 1930s - building of the bridges.

Bottom portion of the golf course is the Motor Parkway.  Motor Parkway Bridge to the left of the New Hyde Park Bridge.  Shelter Rock Road Bridge.  The private entrance to the golf course from the Motor Parkway (see pictures from 1950).

Links Golf Course - first picture from 1925 highlights the trees that are evident in the mystery photo.  The tree line in this picture as well as others I found of the Link Golf Course validates that the course is the Links Golf Course.

I think we’re looking at the first section of the Northern State Parkway under construction in North Hills / North New Hyde Park. Main Roads in the area include New Hyde Park Road, I. U. Willets Road and possibly Marcus Avenue. The photo is looking approximately northeast with the LIMP starting at the bridge in the lower left and heading east through the trees. Besides that bridge, the other two bridges hidden by trees go over New Hyde Park Road and under Old Court House Road. Since the two NSP bridges are complete but not the roadway, I’ll date the photo around 1931-1932. The golf course is The Links Golf Club, which had its own special access to the LIMP and might be visible if you look real close.
