The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Howard,
In Joel Finn’s coffee-table book about Bridgehampton racing, from 1910 or so on through the track up to 1970, there’s a picture of Joe Tracy driving #16 in an early old car commemoration at the 1952 street race, with Peter Helck and his son at his side. He wasn’t racing then, but still able to drive the old car.

Walter Kiernan was my grandfather and this is very interesting to me. I don’t know much about his book writings, so thanks for this!

Hi Howard! I am very impressed with the many people who want to preserve the land of the LIMP. We desperately need the opportunity to preserve our local history and the benefits of trails is an added bonus. A great way to involve the people from the surrounding towns to come together and work for the good of this project.
From Opportunity to Provide Input on the Motor Parkway Trail
As preteen kids, we called it the “old motor road”, a great playground for us with our bicycles. The closest portion of it was north of LIJ and Hillside Hosp, and a no mans land south between what the was I sort of remember the Deepdale Golf Course, now the North Shore Towers.
West it ran into 73 Av in Glen Oaks, across the Queens Farm onto Creedmoor and into Alley Pond all the way to Cunningham west of Francis Lewis across the LIE overpass to Kissena Park into Flushing Meadows.
East was a bridge across the GCP/Northern State that we played on, across Lakeville Rd into the Great Neck South campus.
As we got older, we ventured further east on it, all the way to where I live now in Lake Ronkonkoma. There was a lot more of it then than now from what I can remember from 50 years ago 😊...

A fascinating story of one man’s success story in the New World, and the links to the Steinway Co. and Daimler Benz adds more interesting detail. Thanks to the family for the great story.

Howard,
In 1978, we (Bridgehampton Racing Group) determined that “The Vanderbilt Cup” was not copyrighted or owned by any entity we could discover, so co-opted the name as “The Vanderbilt Cup Challenge” for an annual joint SCCA/EMRA event, on the date of the previously run CAN/AM races, run through 1969. Where better than on Long Island to perpetuate the name?

I wonder if this event was held in conjunction with a California Sports Car Club event? CSCC held many races at the fairgrounds in Pomona during the 1950’s and early 1960’s, and Lindley Bothwell was a member and also a collector of historic cars which he ran in “exhibition” races during that period.

Howard,
I really enjoyed reading the 1906 Brochure for the American Mercedes. As a member of the NYC-Long Island Mercedes-Benz Club,it was a especially relevant for me. I would never have had the opportunity to see this rare brochure, had it not been posted on your fine website and provided to you by Sam III.
Thank you both,
Jerry Shapiro

Great site, Howard. I’ve been checking back often to see if the Jimmy Snyder #43 MRL SPL photo is ever updated/corrected. Image shown is the program cover. Would love to see it.
