The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. Hi Howard. Thanks as always for your automotive journalism. Is the location The Stonybrook carriage museum? I know it’s a stretch but I thought I’d give it a try!

the young lady, Evelyn Ericson, in the picture is my mother. Sadly, she passed away in October 2004. My grandfather was Gustaf Eric Ericson. My mother donated the gates to the Vanderbilt Musuem along with records my grandfather kept of his experiences as gatekeeper.
Thank you for this update, although it saddens me to see this small piece of history disappear.
Sincerely,
Frances Miller

Dear Howard, You are correct in that my grandfather never purchased a Simplex but
ordered a model D Locomobile semi racer in 1904 and went on to purchase an interest in Locomobile #7 in 1905. He subsequently purchased several Fiats and
Locomobiles through 1912. Your readers can see more of his cars on The Old Motor.

Congratulations on the BEST CAR IN SHOW Howard. There is no way you can ever not win at a car show with THE BLACK BEAST, it’s the most original and oldest car there and always a crowd pleaser, especially the kids, you letting them sit in it and taking their pictures, that’s great. Most of the cars you took pictures of I saw, but some I didn’t see, they most have left before I got there. As I said last time you take great pictures, thanks, In the meanwhile I’ll be watching for more updates

Hi Howard I don’t know if you saw me at the show, but I didn’t want to bother you, you were busy with something on the car, then when I got back, after looking at the other cars you were getting ready to leave. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to talk to you, but my main reason for going was to donate some things, that’s what really counted at this show. I’ll be watching for your postings on the show, I know they will be great, they always are. So until next time, keep well and take care of the BLACK BEAST and 1937 CHRYSLER
