The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

The posts found along the LIMP in Old Bethpage are locust I think. Cedar would not last that long. The ones still standing are still pretty strong.

These guys are deep in the woods. Past experience has taught me to conduct these types of investigations prior to April, or you will be eaten alive by all types of insects. Otherwise you’ll need a suit of armour. Amazing how the 100+ year old cedar posts have endured the test of time!

I’m not sure where this is, might it be Queens to Alley Pond Park? but I don’t see the bridges, that’s why I doubt it. Sam and AL are looking at the poles that are marking where the Motor Parkway is going. I can tell you what I see in each picture. 1) a piece of cement or concrete between the 4th and 5th pole 2) flat ground in the distance 3) also in the distance a car, some kind of building to the left of the car and something in front of the car 4) nothing 5) a hook eye on the pole 6) must have been cutting some tree branches

Any resemblance to my FIAT 500 is purely coincidental! I have a hunch my entire 100HP engine would fit comfortably inside any one cylinder of that monster! Sam, III

DVR alert - my friend Howard Kroplick and his amazing ALCO racer will be featured on the next episode of “Americarna” on Velocity. If you don’t already know Howard’s car is a 1908 machine that won the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup races ( VanderbiltCupRaces.com) and competed in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. This car has racked up numerous concours awards and was driven by Emerson Fittipaldi during pre-race ceremonies for the 100th anniversary Indianapolis 500 as well as by Howard during the 2012 IMS Legends Day event.

Howie:
Very impressive segment. (I hope I can get Americarna out here on the Left Coast, on Direct TV). I was unaware that Walter Chrysler actually worked for Alco when they were manufacturing cars, and that’s what led him to go into the automobile manufacturing business. . . . .very interesting.

If I recall my history correctly, in his early career Mr. Chrysler worked for the American Locomotive Company. and one has to wonder if he had the opportunity to work on the “Beast” or other Alcos.
