I’m waiting with bated breath to finally see the finished package.
Thank you for all the updates.
I’m curious about the make and supplier of the tires that are on those
beautiful wheels.

Gram and I are SO excited…We literally feel like WE have a car going to Pebble Beach!
You have done so much for all of us on Long Island Howard. You’ve turned our “piece” of the auto-magnitude in history into such a viable and excitingly relevant piece of the puzzle!

I took a quick look at the Motor Parkway Trail East Meadow, it not maintained very well, the grass seed that they put down didn’t take too well and the weeds are overgrown, on both sides. The trail is full of stuff falling from the trees, especially tree bark, not very safe for anything, I would say, maybe that’s why I didn’t see anyone, just walking your dog is about the safest thing. They did cut the branches I mentioned last time, the ones that where very loose. Everything else looks the same, so I didn’t bother with pictures. That’s it on my updates.

I haven’t a clue but I’d like to guess….Hicksville or Hempstead near the slowdown control sections of the race, or Garden City where many buildings like that still stand. I agree that the building would not be on the motor parkway since it was 1904 .... and I am at a loss for the makes of the cars as well, but fun stuff to ponder about.

I seem to remember this story back in the sixties. After dying in the plane crash his cars were auctioned. I recall the Buicks, I thought there were several early ‘40 Buicks included in the auction.
Interesting to recall this event.

Not an easy puzzle, if it was only because of the coarse grid of the picture. The right car appears to be a 1909 Stevens-Duryea model X. The left car was slightly more challenging: first I thought of an EMF, but the car is too large. So I ended up with a 1910 Chalmers-Detroit model 30 and that seems to fit rather well.
On the basis of the info the garage must be located in Jericho, but that is as far I could get. The rest of the puzzle I must leave to others.

Was it on Merritt Parkway?

Dorothy was my grandmother. I never met her and don’t know too much about her family. It was very exciting to stumble upon this history. Oddly enough I named my daughter Ellen without knowing!

Walter,
Do you have a record of who was there with a Simplex - Crane with a Victoria top? Just saw an amazing movie of the 39 Meet and the Simplex - Crane sure looks like the one in the Museum. Also shows up at the 1940 Meet.
Regards,
Roberto

So this is what the original hospital looked like. This is very cool. I’ve heard about local East Meadow residents resisting the construction of the new 18 story structure. And if Michael says, that the original hospital structures still exists there today, hiding behind the 18 story tower, I’ll be visiting there soon to check this out!

Sorry if my previous post came across a bit too presumptuous. As many of you know, the Bill Spear/Austin Clark car was converted from a runabout to a raceabout by my father Hyde Ballard’s shop in 1946/1947 at the same time the restoration on his car was started. ,The Bill Spear/Austin Clark car made its debut at the Spring AACA meet in Glenside, Pa. in 1947. The car became well known on the East Coast along with other T-Head Mercers belonging to collectors Murchio, Fetteroff, Bailey, Ullman, Cunningham, Melton, Bradley and others.

Yes, I agree, I always remember him as Austin.
I can’t help but be fascinated by all the fanfare generated by this car. Makes me wonder about my car which is the only documented 1911 raceabout that left the factory as a raceabout. Was also raced, been in the same family since 1942 and has a great provenance.
The RM auction will undoubtedly influence the status of my car.

I’m reading these answers and not believing what I’m reading, Can’t believe that it’s the Meadowbrook Hospital. I got totally thrown off by all the buildings and I said I have never seen this area before, that was the shocker, how’d I miss it, I’m always around their

Was away for the weekend and didn’t get a chance to work on this and I don’t think I have ever seen this area before. To me it looks as though this area was built up. The buildings look pretty modern to me, so the aerial most have been taken between 1998 and 2000. I had to give you my thoughts about it, I couldn’t just let it go, even if I don’t have any answers

I think it may be Meadowbrook Hospital on Hempstead tpke around 1944.
