The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Yipes!!!!! We’ve been following the adventures of this amazing car for two years now! Totally psyched that it’s “in the family” so to speak! Can’t wait to see it.
We’re going to Belmont today! Take it out for a spin!

I agree with Walt, once demolished it’s gone forever. Landmark status is the way to go.

Thanks Walt. I kinda though it was a LeBaron design, that’s why I said Dodge or Plymouth, didn’t know they do other cars too

I remember the hospital well as I delivered a Newsday paper to the Morgue located down a driveway to the first basement level. This was probably 1954-55.

Brad, I delivered Newsday in East Meadow, too!

My family moved to East Meadow around 1950-1951 and bought a new cape code house at 288 (?) Old Westbury Rd. less than about 1/16 of a mile east of the LIMP #38 bridge. We where one of only two homes out there. Across the road were potato fields and we could see the prison from our front yard. There was a short overgrown auto path that ran from Old Westbury Rd. northeast towards the parkway where people would dump their trash (clothing, washing machines etc.). These where the days of Hoppalong Cassidy and I would play cowboys and Indians alone on the bridge and below it’s east side where stuff was dumped.
It was a wonderful place to play.

Ted, the car in the back round behind Howard and Joey is a 1934 Packard V12 custom coupe body by Packard built to a LeBaron design. One of these coupes was sold new to a fellow , George Davidoff, who lived in Roslyn Estates (not the car in the photo) and that car is now in Bob Bahre’s collection in Maine. Approximately 3 of these custom cars remain.

Art….It was a nice surprise to come across “Art Kleiner” when I reading about Mr. Fuller on wikipedia. I know there’s quite a bit of Brian McCarthys out there. Pretty sure the LIMP website I viewed is yours. Between your own research and what you bring to Howard’s site, you writing about anything would’nt shock me at all. BDM

Glad to see others learned a bit about Fuller and his ideas (and sorry about last week’s mystery photo). Fuller was rather fascinating! Brian and Tim mentioned that I’ve written about the car in my book, “The Age of Heretics”. This might be the case, but it was not my book (actually I’ve never written any books). I share the name Art Kleiner with a much more scholarly person than I - I first found this out about 15 years ago when I started getting e-mails from people congratulating me on a book I had written, and I had to confess they had the wrong Art Kleiner. I did correspond with the “other” Art Kleiner and did read a book or two of his, including the “The Age of Heretics”, but honestly don’t remember the Dymaxion in it. Will go back and take it out again and see. More recently, the “other” Art Kleiner is employed by a major management consultant of which my current employer uses and for which I’m the key contact. In fact, some e-mails directed to me have actually been sent to the “other” Art Kleiner at the firm. One of these days I need to physically meet my actual namesake, the “real” Art Kleiner”. But thanks, Brian and Tim, for giving my ego a boost!
