The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

The photographer is facing north on Commonwealth blvd in Queens. In the distance is the overpass that carried the LIMP over it. At first I thought this overpass was for a train crossing because of the trestle type design. I later realized that in 1912 New York City required all Motor Parkway crossings over public roads had to be constructed in the “trestle” type. The car is a 1928 Chevrolet (AB series). The ladies by the car are either waiting for AAA or contemplating how many of those roadside bricks they can fit inside that Chevy.

David Miller - Below is some screenshots I took out of my Levittown Book. One has some info about the L. W. F. Airfield you mentioned. Also an overview of Levittown in 1947, prior to the construction of the Levitt Homes. The aerial was number marked, describing the landmarks.
Since we can attach 3 images per comment, there’s an image of Lake Ronkonkoma in 1905, so prior to the LIMP being built : )

I read somewhere that Clarence Duncan Chamberlain owned or operated the L.W.F airfield in Hempstead plains / Island Trees, (pre Levittown), where todays Target is off of Hempstead tpke. I can’t find that information anymore though.

I was stationed at Mitchell Field. I was one of the pilots assigned to a navaids flight inspection squadron in June 1958. As I recall, there were no C-119s there at that time. There was only a base flight unit with small transport aircraft and our squadron with three C-47s and two C-45s. We were responsible to make sure that all navigation aids of whatever kind were operating correctly. By this time the base had dwindled down to being an entrance point for high ranking military and government officials who were coming to New York for fun filled weekends. I am sorry to bust your tale of the glamorous aspects of the history of this old base, but someone caught the base commander and several f his subordinates involved in a wife swapping club and decide to close the bae before even more scandalous things could take place. If tis last observation hits wayyy to close to revealing names of these officials, you may delete it from this posting. Incidentally, I made the last official flight into and out of Mitchell Field. Our squadron had been reassigned to Westover AFB in Massachusetts, and I had to go back and pick up a few things we had to leave behind when we were all tossed off the base grounds in its sudden closure. I flew in in a C-34 and my control tower operator was a radioman sitting in the back end of a jeep down by the flight line. Is this where I have to say these were the good ole times??

Hello Art;
I found the same 9 year old mystery photo post and was going to submit the same info as you with the additional note that it looks like Chamberlin himself walking along just beyond the left wing.

Quite amazing that in 1965 as NYC was entering a stage of full collapse its board trout it was worth the Tim and money to commission a painting of the glory days of the railroad.
With those kinds of priorities there’s little wonder the company failed.
