The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Second thoughts. Methinks the captions of “Lancia finishing the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race ahead of Tracy’s Locomobile” and “Tracy driving the Locomobile pass {sic} the parked Lancia” may have been swapped [“past”, by the way]. Sam, III

Terrific job done by Ellyn organizing this event - so many moving parts which I was glad to be a part of. And a shout out to Bobby for his work before and during the event.
I especially liked being able to combine two passions of mine - the Motor Parkway and Amateur Radio. And while atmospheric conditions were not ideal for ham radio, contacts were made with hams in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and NY.
It was great seeing the community involved and the support provided by the police in all three counties. And what a dedication ceremony! Bravo!

Yay! I got something right. Sam - you cracked me up.

Guessing, the #4 looks closest to the 120hp Fiat driven by Vincenzo Lancia in the 1905 VCR race. This photo must’ve been taken before Lancia’s accident with Walter Christie during lap 4. As expected, Lancia took the lead early in the race. Perhaps they used his Fiat, the crowds favorite car, to announce the start of the race by the Mineola grandstand. If correct, Lancia is driving, Mechanician Alissa is sitting on the rear spare tire, and in the passenger seat with bull horn is NOT Willie K. Curious to know if anything above is correct.

Not only do these posts satisfy my LIMP, auto, and LI history interests, they also strike home every so often, especially since I’ve lived in Mineola and Westbuty, only blocks from the LIMP and VCR RsoW. I’ve spent many hours in the Bach BSS, on my own, with my kids and their cousins, and with my grandkids, and never realized the connection. [Funny, I got my own BSS from Adelphi!] Sam, III

This was a great time even with the weather issues. I loved seeing the old cars (1908 RR and Model A club cars) and meeting some of the HAMs. Saw some interesting mobile radio tech.
Hope someone posts some pictures, maybe he took shots of some of the more modern older cars.

My son Christopher and I enjoyed this event entirely! The Ham Operators are true professionals. Couldn’t help but smile upon the classics arrival in Ronkonkoma ( Alco included ). Ellyn Okvist’s words of dedication are a testament to her passion.

I have no opinion about the marker, but I do have a boyhood recollection of “knowing” that it was George Robertson who drove “Lindy” to the airport that morning.

#4 Fiat driven by Vincenzo Lancia at the grandstands at the 1905 or 1906 Cup race, but that’s all I have.

The text for the 1938 Chrysler Limosine built for Mrs. Walter Chrysler states the engine is a 324 cubic inch V-8, but I think that is an error as I think the engine is probably a flat head straight eight. Otherwise a great article and congratulations to Howard.

Good catch Joe!
From The Classic Car Magazine Cover Story: "A Chrysler for the Mrs."
Identify the Vanderbilt Cup Race and the location of the image: 1905 VCR, Mineola Grandstand
Identify the race car and the three people in the race car.: Fiat #4. Inside car could be driver Vincenzo Lancia, Mechanician Alissa, and Willie K?
Provide an explanation on what is happening in the photo. After an accident b
between Lancia and another car, spectators came onto the track. Probably warning people to stay off track. Another possibility is taking an injured driver or mech. to see Dr.

In reading the article a mentioning of the engine ‘324-cid V-8’ really? an error, straight eight!

The factory pose in between 2 new Tucker cars is the real gem: a throwback to the post-war era (I was 2). Enjoyed that photo - looks like the suit my father wore to work every day at his NYC office!
