I noted Elmer A. Sperry, Jr. I checked to determine if he was “Sperry’s” son (Sperry Gyroscope).

Hmmm As always , a great photo…I,m guessing , but I suspect ,it may be Mitchell Field, The Elevated photo suggests it may have been taken from the Control tower!  A hsort story!  i was born in 1941, So i have some very early recollections of Mitchell field as a kid!  .. I recall on a shopping trip to Hempstead, ( in my parents car,) Spotting a parachute on our return trip to Farmingdale…( in levittown area, ) The mystery was solved the next day, when the Paper revealed a Pilot had ejected from an early jet, After he aimed it ,out over the Atlantic ocean! ( to crash?)  Long Island, A great place to grow up ,in WW2 !  I recall much, regarding all the history of aircraft factories here, Republic, and Grumman…  My father never quite understood my love of Flying?  How could I not love airplanes…...they were always over my head as a kid!

Interesting encounter! Goes to show how important it is to read the document first before you sign it!. That certainly would have been a valuable conversation piece that Mel Erlick would have loved to have framed on his wall. Did you mention to him you are from the town William Casey lived in?

With all the recent news about 41st president George Bush passing and his life’s history I was surprised that I never realized he was from the same city in Texas that also is where Jim Hall and his Chaperall collection reside.

Thank you for sharing this memory with us. Political party preference does not matter when you have a caring , honorable and trust worthy man or woman at the helm. Mr. Bush was indeed one of these people and set a fine example for not only the USA but for children to look up to as someone who did the right thing with no personal negative attributes or desires to tarnish his position or reputation. We are all better for his service to our country.

Possibly wooden structures at Camp Mills related to the Base Hospital?  Photo may have been taken at low altitude from a biplane from Mineola Aviation Field #1 (Roosevelt Field) or Mineola Aviation Field #2 (Mitchel Field).  Orientation would be slightly to the Southeast.

Building with the smokestack may have been the Camp Mills Power Building.  Buildings off in the distance may have been associated with the Curtis plant in Garden City.

Row of trees may be the LIMP or could be Stewart Ave with the LIMP running parallel to it.  Central RR branch appears to be in the foreground parallel to it.

Small brick structure may be the Garden City toll/entrance to the LIMP which still stands today further south as the Chamber of Commerce in downtown GC.

Camp Mills was decommissioned in 1919.  Photo is likely from that approximate period.

“Sing, Sing, Sing”?  A tad anachronistic.

Yes, this was in the time period of Mr. Clinton’s less than appropriate behavior. A few seconds of confusion and surprise followed by laughter. He’ll never forget this moment either, Howard. Thanks for sharing.

Revising my comment here. After zooming in onto the lone abutment image, what I thought was a plaque is actually a SHADOW. So the “space” between the top ends of the abutment is for the roadway, Old Country Rd. Fairly certain that’s a temp backing on the opposite side of the abutment while the concrete hardens.

Brian - Great catch!!! Great Scott, I overlooked it. The sign is identical to the Mayan Ruins’ sign placement. The trees are different in the back. Sending Howard the pic.

Steve - You cracked me up this time.

My grandfather, Thomas J. Leonard, was a chauffeur for the Holloways for many years and I have many memories of Foxland.  My grandparents lived in a three bedroom cottage on the estate.  The estate was beautiful and I loved the place.  I roamed all over those seventy-five acres as a child.  I loved the stables and being around the horses.  The groom would let me help groom the horses with him.  I even fell in the swimming pool one day when I was very young while trying to reach a float and had to be fished out by my mother.  We would ride our sleds in the rolling front pastures in winter.  I often played with William, one of Holloway grandchildren.  The Holloways were wonderful people and were great to my grandparents.

Didn’t really want to attempt this mystery, but I have some thoughts about the aerial.

I was trying to find an image of here 1960’s, early 70’s no luck. Did find a 1913 postcard image of the clock tower viewing west. The cannon was not in the image ( realize a cannon from the Spanish/American war was and is currently on the east side of the tower in the direction of the flagpole ). Does anyone know when the cannon was placed here?

This aerial is basically viewing east. There’s a small spruce tree “hiding” the cannon, assuming that the cannon had to be here by then. Perhaps knowing when this tree was removed might hone in on the time of this aerial? It’s not particularly tall in this image. Maybe it was decorated during Christmas? This tree isn’t there presently.
