The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. “I can recall Candlewood Path having open access to Deer Park Ave until the mid 1960’s at the location adjacent to Deer Park Ave. I think they closed it after there were too many accidents, it was a very confusing intersection, especially after the 1965 or so widening of DP Ave. There is no doubt that the location is correct here… I also used to play at the abandoned DP Speedway and some old guy would shoot BB’s at us when he saw us on the property. It was redeveloped in the late 1980s.
You also could walk all the way to the LIE where the terminus was created at Half Hollow Road back then, I made my dad take me there when I was 5, just had to see it!”

Amazing . I used to drive this section(Ronkonkoma to Fox Lane almost every day in the 70s and 80s) those old pictures literally gave me the chills. Great work CSI team.

John Wm Mackay [pronounced Mackee] started the family fortune in 1859 making $4 a day as a miner in Virginia City NV. He was one of the richest men in America by the time he was in his mid-30s. He invested in the Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable with part of his silver mining fortune. Clarence was born when John was 43 years old. John Mackay past on in 1902 leaving his business’ for Clarence to build on.

Appears to be facing west, with the entry of Carll’s Straight Path on the left side. DeForest Ave. would be a bit further up, on the right, possibly hidden due to the angle of the photo. Timing of the photo unknown, but guessing around 1918, since Sept 8 did fall on a Sunday.
