The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Mystery Foto #39… The driver is Louis Wagner and the mecanician is Victor Demogeot. The car is a 1906 Darracq in which Wagner and Demogeot won the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup race. Photo taken in 1906 at the Hotel Glenwood (headquarters for the Darracq team) in Glenwood Landing. I believe that this is the 1906 race because Wagner had different mecanicians in the other races in which he competed.
Below see Darracq poster and the race car as she looks present day.

Hello, I’m new here. I’ve had great interest in the LIMP recently and because I live in Farmingdale, this is not too far from me. I’ve been using google street view to look at the surrounding areas, but it looks fenced off. Does visiting this location require trespassing onto private property, or am I missing something? Any response appreciated, thank you.

Howard, What a unique treasure trove of documentation for an already unique automobile - to be able to have construction photos of a specific auto which still exists - congrats!!!

It was an excellent show! The best turnout I’ve ever seen at this show. Sorry I missed you Howard but the Tucker was beautiful as usual. Congratulations!

Funny how none of us esteemèd LI historians mentioned Hillside Hospital (now Zucker-Hillside, a leading psychiatric center) which was there long before LIJ, a little further into Glen Oaks along the LIMP/74th. I was about to post a pic of the old facility but can’t find a single one (too much stuff/not enough access)! That’s also the site of the Ronald McDonald House today. Not so funny was when my then-wife was booted out of her very-nice room at LIJ so that the wife of a Chief of Service could get it! Sam, III

I remember being admitted to this hospital back in 1976 when first diagnosed with Type I diabetes (14 years old). Care back then was paramount compared to today. I clearly remember a nurse mentioning how the hospital was split between two counties. Now I know what she meant. Thank you nurse Doreen Small for all your care and assistance with this ongoing disability. I’m now 56 and still kicking ass.

Frank, I truly can’t believe you haven’t come to this location yet. You have to get here this year!
Brian, you are correct. I love the zone from round swamp rd really to the bridge. It’s a throw back. I want to investigate the section just over spagnoli rd, north of the fence and then east towards the farm. There has to be some remnants.
SBIII, stop drinking so much will you???

Excellent images guys. Your becoming quite the photographer, Dave. There always seems to be a downed tree or 2 on that original pkwy section in BSP. Likely not a priority task for park employees to clear away. Witnessed quite a few trees down behind Madonna Heights, need a small army for over there : ) Battle Row section gives one the ‘real feel’ of the LIMP. Still looks nice & clear at the bridge, despite the deterioration.

*LIMP section & Location, Orientation of Photographer: This is just past the Nassau & Queens border. Photographer was likely on the roof of LIJ Hospital, viewing N/W. LIMP ROW would be running from N/E to S/W through the parking lot.
*Golf Course: known as Glen Oaks Golf & Country Club in this era.
*Mid 1960’s going by the types of automobile’s, Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle stands out.
