The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

I stumbled upon the answer for this Foto while comparing the bridges over Little Neck Pkwy & Commonwealth Blvd. Locations are similar with some differences. This is the pkwy bridge over Little Neck Pkwy in Queens, viewing north. Like a few of these past bridges in Queens, this one was built with railroad specifications. The differences are marked in the below images.

Just a hunch but that picture of the LIRR freight cars delivering materials for the Motor Parkway would probably be somewhere between Merrick Ave and points just east. Those poles look a lot like they supported the experimental catenary (overhead wires) that the PRR was experimenting with in that area prior to the Penn Station build and the electrification of the Eastern area of the PRR. This is the first hint that the LIRR was involved in the building of the Motor Parkway but it makes sense since it was the most efficient way to move large amounts of material. Indeed, in the late 40s and early 50s, as we know, Levitt would use the LIRR to deliver materials for the nascent Levittown.

Queens, the first Winchester Avenue Bridge looking west.
Railroad type bridges were required by NYC when the bridge was build in 1912.
Since the roadway appears to have been removed, mid-1930s before the bridge was demolished.

Their name was pronounced MACKee. His father started the family fortune silver mining in Virginia City NV. John Mackay lived in NV while his wife partied in France. There was still enough money for Clarence to invest in the Atlantic under water telegraph system that kept the family’s wealth in tact. Nevada silver money helped finance the North during the Civil War.

The steps on either side of the bridge look like the ones that are still at Springfield Boulevard, so I’m guessing that that’s where this photo was taken.

Thanks Al, excellent Motor Parkway info as always. I couldn’t see how the layoffs would allow effective toll collection while gatekeepers are resting inside Monday through Friday. Thank you for clarifying.

I think we’re looking west with the LIMP going over Marcus Avenue in the Lake Success area. The shadow of the sun seems to indicate a north-south direction of the LIMP. The style of bridge followed the railroad trestle convention the was mandated through most of nearby Queens County. Since the south embankment has been mostly removed, I’m guessing the date to be during the construction of nearby Glen Oaks Village; maybe around 1948.

Frank, The layoffs in 1935 lasted only until April that year. All the lodges from Rocky Hill to Huntington, with some short exceptions, remained opened until the Parkway closed in 1938. The only free portion was east of the Huntington if you accessed the Parkway EAST of the Huntington Lodge. If you did find a way to access the Parkway with out paying, you could not get off at a lodge location with out surrounding a paid toll ticket. More info in my book.
