The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

That’s a REALLY rare car! Now why do I get a strong flavor of the new company’s destiny following the old one’s? Sam, III

Give-away! 19 Mar 1989 move of the Garden City lodge from Vanderbilt Court off Clinton Road to the southeast corner of 7th Street. We’re looking west on Old Country Road as the lodge crosses the LIMP RoW at the Eagle Rock apts. (right). Details on Blog for 05 Jun 2010, “The Day the Garden City Lodge Moved- March 19, 1989”. Not noted is the wild detour up Clinton to OCR and then west and down Franklin to 7th; this was for clearances. Sam, III

You may really toot your own horn, Howard. You do so much for so many. You seem to be in rather good company, too. I’m so glad to see another recognition of all your work. Truly a modern day renaissance man! Sam, III

1958 was just before I got hooked but what strikes me more than anything else is the footprint of the Rocky Hill Lodge. Wow! Talk about re-discovering relics! Neat start to a new series; thanks. Sam, III

It’s all wonderful and always has been, but let’s not forget that the entire program is funded, as far as I can tell, by Howard. That is a philanthropy to all of us…..!
Congratulations on your Wharton honors. Very much deserved.

As a 9 year old this was MY motor parkway! Endless bike rides. Navy gating the underpass in Alley Pond Park. Ever so curious about the Hobo camp just east of Francis Lewis, hidden in the trees just out of sight of the cars passing on Union. I truly became a Motor Parkway fan for life.

Garden City Motor Parkway lodge being moved from Clinton road /Vanderbilt court location on March 13 1989.
Headed to 230 7th street Garden City( GC Chamber of commerce).
Location is intersection of Old Country road and Vanderbilt Drive N in Mineola-( or in between Pell Terrace and Russell road inGarden City )facing west .
Irony is this photo was snapped as lodge crossed site of old motor parkway as it crossed under old country road….( OCR bridge)
You can still find a few old concrete fence posts off Vanderbilt drive. I grew up 2 blocks from there.

Could be Brian! She’s very similar to that girl by Lakeville Rd. This could very well be the lost collection associated to that photo.

Very interesting, looking forward to this. Believe this is the same lady seen in the LIMP Bridge Series, Lakeville Rd.

I don’t know what lodge it is. However, it was being transported westbound on Old Country Rd. to 7th St. in Garden City just east of Franklin Ave where, I think, it was intended to be used as an exhibit. From what I remember, the move occurred in the mid-‘80s. What I think is ironic about the location of the photo is that it is where the Motor Parkway’s north/south roadway passed either over or under what was then a narrow Old Country Rd.

I was 10 years old in 1958 and rode my bike on the Vanderbilt Pkwy more times than I can remember. The LIE was under construction through Fresh Meadows at the time. and the Clearview Xway was not yet being constructed south of its interchange w/the LIE. As can be noticed in the photos, nothing was done to keep the right of way clear. Rather, it merely was a remnant of a world gone by. All I knew at the time from word of mouth that it was an abandoned roadway. Notice, also, that the Grand Central Pkway was the original parkway; reconstruction of this section did not start until 1971, from what I remember. And notice, too, the cars. Although they were death traps, weren’t they beautiful?
