The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Thank you for continuing to share these jewels from
The Helck Archives. And for all of the others adding to it with their comments.
I recall Jerry Helck stating that the other Loco that raced in the V Cup in ‘08 was pushed off a pier in Bridgeport by the factory. Maybe we should check the water.

Garden City, looking west.
Old Country Road, Clinton Road, LI Motor Parkway, Stewart Avenue.
Clinton Road Bridge, Old Country Road Highway Bridge, Garden City Lodge, Superintendent’s first office.
approx. 1918. No homes built. Intercollegiate Golf Club not built yet.
Curtiss Jenny (possibly the “H” model being tested as there seems to be an “H” on the nose and there is no ID number that I can see. The “H” model came out in 1918. (To be honest I saw Curtiss Jenny noted on a comment that was opened, but not the H).
Happy Halloween!

We are looking west over East Garden City over today’s Roosevelt Field shopping mall. Major roads include the LIMP, Clinton Road, Old Country Road, Stewart Avenue and Commercial Avenue. LIMP structures include bridges over Clinton Road and under Old Country Road; also the Garden City Lodge and superintendent’s office. I think the plane is a Curtiss JN-6 “Jenny”. Based on what appear to be then current US Army Air Corps markings on the plane, I’ll date the photo around 1922.

The Stoddard Dayton photographed in this post is not a 1911. It’s either a 1909 or 1908 Stoddard Dayton. Starting in 1910 Stoddard Dayton went from elliptical rear springs to 3/4 elliptical springs also the rear fenders on the 09/ 08 Stoddard Dayton’s were flat (pancake) style. Starting in 1910 they were rounded over the rear tire. It would be interesting to see if the engine.
I attached 2 pics of my 1909 Stoddard Model F 45Hp and you can see the springs. Note the spring hangers are backwards on the white one. The red Stoddard is my 1910 50hp you can see the fenders are rounded.

Greg, Prior to the adaption of the steam engine for automotive use, one needed a “license” to operate one. So…. some municipal jurisdictions required a license to operate a vehicle so equipped. Remember reading somewhere Willie K. got a license from Westchester County early on. It was said because the County police would wait for Willie on his trips between NYC and Newport.

Art, Walter Travis was the Bobby Jones of golf around the turn of the 20th century. Never tuned professional, died sometime in the late 1920’s

I see that on the floor plan it notes they will have a research library. What will be the extent/depth of the library? and what years will it encompass? Will it be devoted to just vehicles made in the USA and will it include cars as well as commercial vehicles? Who will be the head of the library and what are their qualifications?
I am curious , as I have been ( still am) active in researching automotive history and am an author as well as a member of the Society of Automotive Historians ( was granted a Complimentary membership in 2019 ) and was a former Vice President, National Director, and Editor of their publications .
This is the first I see mention of this new facility.

My Mom, who was born in Great Neck spoke of a KKK Cross Burning on Steamboat Rd. in the late 20’s about 100 yds from her home. Scared the life out of her as she was 10 yrs old. Steamboat Rd was inhabited by a lot of Eastern European Catholics and Southern Blacks. There’s a notation about it in the Hofstra archives somewhere.

-The location of the aerial and orientation of the photographer
Photographer is looking West directly over Roosevelt Field.
-Identify the major roads
Old Country Rd vertically on the extreme right. Clinton comes in from the right with the curve of the LIMP over Clinton towards the middle in the lower part of the photo. Stewart vertical on the left.
-Long Island Motor Parkway structures
Old Country Rd bridge, Mayan ruins, Clinton bridge, managers office, Garden City lodge.
-The date of the aerial. Provide a rationale.
Kudos question: Identify the airplane.
The Curtiss JN Jenny was introduced in 1915 and used through the late 20’s. I’ll go with the guesstimate of about 1920 for this photo.
From Mystery Foto #44 Solved: Curtiss JN Jenny in the clouds over Curtiss Field in 1925
That looks like the LIMP curve in Garden City, which would mean that the photographer is looking west and the plane is traveling due north. I see the Clinton Road and Old Country Road LIMP bridges. The photo has “J.N.” in the caption, so is the plane a Curtiss Jenny?

Regarding Tom Padilla’s comment: In 1922 the Freeport KKK was formed; The Daily Review would regularly post articles about KKK meetings in Freeport and Hempstead in 1924 & 1925. In 1926 a huge KKK Rally was held in Washington, D.C., which encouraged the spread of the Klan, including here on L.I. In Mineola a Klorero [rally] was held on the Mineola Fair Grounds, from July 3-6, 1926. In October 1926 the “Bethpage Social Club” was chartered in Farmingdale as the local Klan, while as late as 1930 the “Theodore Roosevelt Klan” was still active in Roosevelt. Local newspapers recount parades of Klansmen in full regalia, including the funerals of local members. One account is for the annual lighting of a community’s Christmas Tree. These are just some of the mentions of the KKK here on L.I.

Did anyone notice that south of Corona, approximately where Elmhurst would be situated, the map says, “Ku Klux Klan hot bed” with a burning cross depicted? I have read that the Klan had been active on Long Island, but Queens, in this period? I am astounded. And perhaps as much so the map’s creator would note it.

Great post Art! Love this LI history stuff.
Very interesting about the possible railroad angle. Is that possible that might have been part of the original plan?? Howard?? Have you ever come across that question??
It does bother me when these classic Gold Coast mansions get torn down. Some of these owners donated their estates to the church for tax purposes for sure but also for preservation and kindness to the church. The church accepts the donation but then cashes In on the sale of the property. That’s not right. Inisfada was an amazing estate. I’m really surprised nothing has been built there yet. It’s been several years and that is a prime location and with the real estate market as it currently is…it’s hard to believe it just sits abandoned.

Beautiful Art! I pass the gates all the time since my mother just moved into the Estates gated community on what used to be Inisfada’s property.
Wish the mansion still stood, but understand why they took it down. It was just too large to serve in any capacity to financially sustain the building.
