The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Howard,
Would you have additional pictures of the George McKesson Brown, or his auto?

It’s great when there’s access to ground level photos of these bridges, but they must be difficult to come across, Howard. Hopefully somebody will have some. Good luck on the Searingtown Rd area. I particularly enjoy the bridge series overall. Thanks, Howard.

Also…. you can see in the 2012 overview how Shelter Rock Road was slightly west of the current day road.

I love Ron’s picture. It is how I remember this area as a kid. There used to be a gate held up by two brick pillars at the private entrance. I remember it well. Thanks again.

“Howard-
To this day, I am not certain how I came to be on your mailing list but I am certainly glad it happened. I enjoy every mailing for one reason or another. Some of the photos are amazingly sharp.
It would be wonderful if every historic racing venue had its own Howard Kroplick. Keep it up!

Nice to see the Klingberg exposure.
I would have liked to have been a judge again this year, but had a prior commitment.

Harry, Roosevelt Field had two fields. The main field was Field 2. Field 1 was the secondary field and later became Roosevelt Raceway , the site of the 1936 and 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Races. I have added tags below for these two races.

Hi,
Beautiful art work by Erick Sloane! In the 1950’s I rode out from Bayside on my bicycle to buy lacquer for my model airplanes at Air Associates. Did Field 1 become Mitchel Field?

Howard, thanks - nice pictures. Coincidentally, I just picked up a postcard dated 1912 titled “East Wing of W.K. Vanderbilts Residence , Lakeville, NY. I’ll send you a scan so we can compare.

What a beautiful and idyllic stretch of land! Even if it was not a potential, historic sight, it should be left a open land.

Looks real nice in the park/grass setting, I agree tho, fresh paint is needed.

John, you are correct. However, there are no remnants of the Parkway remaining.

A roadway that runs behind the synagogue, from the parking lot at its southern end to the driveway exit leading onto Lakeville Road, seems to follow the path of the LIMP.

Hi James:
Not really. This area was cleared for road and parking lot construction.

Does anything at all of the original highway exist in that short stretch between the location of the Marcus Ave bridge and where it crosses Lakeville Road?
