The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Yes Howard,I looked through all the particapating cars in the races and couldn’t find it anywhere,I even searched on an old car website and,I wanted to try to find out what kind of a car it is,but nothing even looked like it,as to where you sit in it,but the rest of the car looks alike. Anxious to know where it will be found by someone

This car strongly resembles the 1908 ITALA Grand Prix car, which sold at austion last year for over $2m. I saw the car racing many times during the VSCC races in England during the ‘60s driven by its owner Cecil (Sam) Clutton. The car is featured on page 48-49 in his book “The Vintage Motor Car”. It has a 12 litre, four cylinder engine - and was something to see and hear! This ITALA now has wire wheels, not wooden wheels as shown.

Sam III, you are pointing to the Central Avenue Bridge that went over both the road and the LIRR. The Nibbe Farmway Bridge was located near the bottom of the “M” on the map. The map did not indicate the bridge. These posts may be helpful: http://www.vanderbiltcupraces.com/blog/tag/tag/stymus+farm

Nibbe’s Hollow was north of the Stymus property. The bridge to which I refer is shown as instantly above/north of (adjacent to) the CPAve/LIRR bridge. Here, I marked up a smitch of the map:

to be most specific. Is THAT the Nibbe bridge?

I’d go with 1906 but it’s clearly noted “Lancelot”, whatever that proves. Sam, III

Very nice presentation. The Belcher-Hyde map lets me see the part of the parkway that I used to hike on when I was a kid in the early 1950’s, living in Plainedge/North Massapequa. Thanks!

Hi Sam III, I believe you are referring to the Nibbe Farmway Bridge, the next bridge after the Central Ave/LIRR Bridge:

Here’s a puzzler for you folks; if you follow the LIMP RoW east/north/ward from Deadman’s Curve on the 1923 Belcher-Hyde map, the RoW crosses Central Park Avenue and the LIRR with no delineation of the major bridges there BUT then crosses what appears to be an extension of today’s Schneider Lane on a carefully inked bridge to the Wm. O. Stymus property! If this bridge is on your bridges of the Vanderbilt Cup Races page http://www.vanderbiltcupraces.com/blog/article/tuesday_december_8_2009_the_bridges_of_the_vanderbilt_cup_races , I can’t find it (but, as you wrote, you can’t trust maps”). Would you please be kind enough to list this on your car show / events calendar for APRIL 2013
THANK YOU !!

Add to my previous post:
This car had a unique particularity: Eugène Brillié had conceived an engine with four cylinders and two pistons by cylinder working in opposition. It is also one of so first racing cars to use a tubular frame.

Hi Howard,
This is a Gobron-Brillié with Louis Rigolly at the wheel. This car ran the “French Gordon Bennett Elimination Trial” held on May 20, 1904 in Argonne, France (DNF, lost radiator on lap 1).

I agree with Elliot, there’s plenty more to it than just that,That’s nothing new to us

Howard—
A really interesting pilot. Does Michael Spiter have any thoughts about increasing its running time? Never focused on the rich vs. poor man aspect of the road’s founding, but sure recognized the names Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Morgan and Whitney.

I was at that show at the Klingberg, and photographed both the Cannonball and the Bête Noire. Magnificent automobiles, and a great show!
