The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Al, those old headlights at the time produced inadequate visibility on the dark parkway. I read the racers encountered a lot of cricket noise while staging at the 1909 start line

Greg, A.I. I agree with those that said A.I. did not do a good job with the Vanderbilt Cup Races. Some of the autos are single seaters, at least one two seater has a driver only and what’s with those autos with headlights ? Wait, I remember, those race cars were practicing for the 1907 Vanderbilt Cup Race which was going to be run at night.

Gustave Caillois - an interesting Frenchman who said he didn’t want to finish 1st (he ultimately didn’t even finish) and who used a “dog cutter” to eliminate animals who wandered on the race course.
1906 American Elimination Trial
Finished 7th. Retired with magneto problems on lap 6.

Interesting stuff… the cars seem too low, Some of the tires too fat. Some of the cars are lacking a mecanician. And the helmets?????? AI can be fooled I believe.

Have been to Howard’s Garage to see his car collection a couple of times.
I really enjoyed watching both episodes of Guy’s with Rides.
Howard has an amazing collection of automobiles and we are very fortunate that he shares it with us, at open house’s, car shows and online.
Howard tells the story about each car in his collection.
Well done videos, worth watching.

The Frontenac team had teething problems in 1916 with the brand new cars, but won a number of races from 1917-1919. Sadly the 500 was cancelled in ‘17 & “18.

That’s the #4 Thomas Racer with Gustave Caillois driving and Marcel Pouxe as the mechanician. They participated in the 1906 American Elimination Trial placing 7th having left the race during lap 6 with magneto problems. Consequentially, they did not qualify to enter the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race. In the photo, it looks like they have just arrived at the garage behind Krug’s Hotel in Mineola which was the Thomas headquarters that year.

I would like to know if Jack Greenland’s 1929 Model A Ford Town Car is still exists and being driven these days. I would also like to know exactly where the car is now. If anyone knows this information I would much appreciate it. I had the privilege to ride in this car when I was a young boy and also helped Jack in maintaining the vehicle by checking fluids and polishing before a parade or show.

As a friend of Errol Flynn, McEvoy appeared as an uncredited actor in two films but became known as a scandalous “man of mystery”. You never know who you’ll find driving in a Vanderbilt Cup Race.
