The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. The races had a far-reaching impact on the development of American automobiles and parkways. This site provides comprehensive information on the races, the Long Island Motor Parkway and current Long Island automotive events, car shows and news.

Clearly NOT Roger price, the famed comedian, who died in 1990 (and CERTAINLY not Vincent Price). Oh, ye of little faith; of course Rob knows (he’d better!). Howard, I second Frank F.; please do tell how it came to be in your hands - or is it a repro? It looks too good to be true. Very odd proportions, too; wouldn’t fit on any car or bracket I’ve ever owned. Sam, III

Your Tucker seems to be coming along nicely. Love the color. The second photo looks like a jigsaw puzzle. I hope someone knows how to put it back together. Just a little humor. (very little).

Rog, this is an original 1948 Tucker license plate that was sold two years ago on EBay. Amazingly, Koby, a fellow Motor Parkway license collector, discovered that his friend had one of the Tucker 44 plates.
Koby contacted me via this website. It took three months, but a deal was finally made last week. The plate is now on my desk and soon will be on Tucker 1044!

I pass this spot twice a day! It’s now a driveway to the NYCB bank on Merrick ave in west bury across from Eisenhower park facing west! It was the on ramp to the Long Island Motor Parkway where there was a toll house at the entrance! Before that it was the turn that came down from Ellison ave that then cut over Merrick Ave into Eisenhower park through the golf course and out to Salisbury park drive! Some of the golf cart paths are actually part of the old race course! How cool is that?

Photo is looking westward from Merrick Ave. The ramp leading to the parking structure behind the bank was the route of the LIMP as it crossed Merrick Ave. into the Salisbury Golf Club.
Off in the distance, a portion of the recycling plant can be seen, former site of Mitchel Gardens. The LIMP skirted the edge of the property which was intended as civilian housing for those working at Mitchel Field.

This is a shot looking at the entrance/exit to what is now the NYCB building at 615 Merrick Avenue (west side) and shows the ROW of the Motor Parkway as it approached the Merrick Avenue crossing, heading into what is now Eisenhower Park. The camera is facing west.

Thanks for all your comments and input. The Ham Radio Special Event station will run concurrently with the soon to be announced Challenge of Champions “race” organized by Motor Parkway pal, Ellen O. This “race” will also commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Parkway and Ellen has lots of exciting things planned. She’ll be filling Howard and the rest of us in on the details soon, so be on the lookout.
Date of the ham radio special event station and Ellen’s race is Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018. Ellen and I had a very productive conference call with the President of LIMARC (Long Island Amateur Radio Club) and we all agreed it would be best to have at least three radio stations transmitting along the course (each with a different call sign) - one at the beginning in Cunningham Park, one in the middle and one at the finish in Lake Ronkonkoma. And to Bruce’s comment, we might be able to have a station operating mobile during the race and/or have a car tracking the race participants real time viewable on a computer.
More to come on both the ham radio station and the race so we’ll keep everyone in the loop. But keep Oct. 7 free! Should be a fun time for Motor Parkway and ham radio enthusiasts alike.

We are looking west on Merrick Avenue on the border between Westbury and East Meadow. The driveway in the photo leads to the rear parking lot of the New York Community Bancorp building, 615 Merrick Avenue. It was built over the entrance to the Meadow Brook Lodge on the LIMP. A few feet to the north would have been the LIMP bridge over Merrick Avenue, which was part of the course for the 1908, 1909, and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Races.

This picture is the current site of the Meadowbrook lodge and bridge from the previous mystery foto. Photographer is facing northwest, in the direction of the racecourse and grandstand at Roosevelt Field. The smokestacks in the background are from the Covanta Hempstead plant on merchants concourse. This section was used during the 1908 Cup race. Very new at this so please forgive any mistakes. At the very least, it has to be the same area as the previous mystery foto.

Maureen - I visited the Melville area a few months back in the vicinity of Broad Hollow/Ruland Rds and took photos of the area. If interested, I can send the slideshow with photos indicating location/direction. As Edith mentioned, the place has changed some.
