The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day, and the first international automobile road races held in the United States. Great work but -.. The Transverse Road abutments are dated 1911 or so and WWI wasn’t even a glimmer on the horizon, let alone any Camp Mills or a base hospital for the 42d! An I recall me aright, the Transverse Road bridge was required as a condition of the conveyance of the surrounding land to the LIMP and the provision (as with several other such planned bridges) was never enforced. The company used every trick in the book to avoid constructing anything it could get away without. Mayhap we need Al’s scholarship here. Sam, III

Alva hosted the Congressional Union for Union Suffrage (CU) conference at Marble House on August 29, 1914 and opened the organization’s summer HQ.
The event also coincided with the opening of the tea room and Consuelo’s return from England.

Not too sure about some of the identities but here are my guesses: Conseulo, Willie K’s sister; Virginia, his wife; Alva Belmont, his mother; Muriel, his daughter. I think the youngster in the foreground is Barbara Vanderbilt but can’t determine a relationship. I believe this photo was taken on the steps of the Chinese Tea House that Alva had built on the grounds of her “cottage” Marble House in Newport, RI. on the occasion of the first “Formal Tea” on July, 10, 1914.

I’M TRYING TO GET SOME INFORMATION ON A COUPLE OF BRONZE AWARD ITEMS THAT APPEAR TO BE IN THE 1904-08 RACING PERIOD. VANDERBILT, SAVANNAH? THESE MAY BE PARTICIPANTS PLAQUES? MAYBE ART NOUVEAU STYLE? THE FIRST ONE IS 2 3/4” BY 2 1/4 HAS CHAIN DRIVEN RACER WITH SUNBURST UPPER LEFT CORNER WITH A REPOSED FIGURE HOLDING A TORCH. REVERSE SIDE HAS AN EAGLE ABOVE A RACE CAR WITH AN ENGRAVING BLOCK BENEATH. THE OTHER IS SIMILAR BUT WITH A TRAPEZOID. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANX

This theory has been in the back of my mind ever since Howard was wondering, and now Frank. I can definitely envision a proposed road angling from the NE, following the unfinished bridge; and merging with Transverse Rd. Wish I could make out the years that you see, Frank; on the sign/plaque that’s mounted on the west abutment. Year 1917 would be the right time period. Your mapping is excellent as usual, Frank.
Remember Mr. Bellmer stating that Transverse Rd. was carved out specifically for the Base Hospital ( presumably Hospital Rd. as well ). You have access from Washington Ave., and I’m guessing that Hospital Rd. connected with Clinton Rd. or Stewart Ave.
Howard…You have a Garden City Company Survey Map of a proposed subdivision on the 9/28/2010 Blog: Part 1: The Motor Parkway “Mayan Ruins”. The survey displays a convincing planned road that curves south from Clinton Rd, then west across the LIMP; following the unfinished “Mayan Ruins” overpass. Thanks, Art. I recognize the map of the radio towers at Mitchel, though it appears to be sometime after the photos of 1936. I believe those were the towers located at the Western end of the Base just West of Wheeler Ave.
A small brick building adjacent to the gas station is where the radio communications room was located. From here, planes still at some distance away were given instructions on landing prior to contacting the air traffic control tower.
The towers were located in the field between the gas station and the building that today still serves as the Navy Commissary, near where the coal silos once stood next to the spur of the railroad tracks that lead to the flight line (where the Ringling Brothers Circus used to unload from).
As for the station at Roosevelt Field, the article mentions the R-34 Dirigible that visited from England at the time. I do not know if that experimental station was ever granted a permanent license thereafter.

Looks somewhat like the old Lakeville Hotel on Lakeville Rd. And I.U. Willetts Rd. In Lake Success looking northwest. The 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races passed in front of this hotel. It was later known as the Elverton Inn and the Red Lion Inn. The hotel burned down in the 1930s.

Thanks for the info on the close-ups, Lee. Having an interest in radio, I’ll be sure to do some research into the antenna. But so far I’ve found an experimental aeronautical radio station with call letter, W2XCV, being licensed to Roosevelt Field, Inc. (Mineola) with listings in govt. publications in 1927 and 1930. Not certain if these are related to the tower you point out. Also, there are radio antennas shown on a previously documented map of Mitchel Field on Howard’s blog and elsewhere.
I’m sending Howard some pics and docs which I’m hoping he’ll post here to add to the discussion. More to come, hopefully.

Is this building still standing? If not, when was it taken down? Building burned in 1927, however other entries onto the blog have it still in business in 1930s.

Mystery Foto #30…. This building, The Lakeville Inn back in the day, was located at the North East corner of the intersection of Lakeville Road and I.U. Willets road in Lakeville. The inn was along the route of the 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt cup races.
The inn was later named The Elverton Inn and in 1932 became the Red lion Inn. No longer standing because later in the ‘30s it burned down.
Lakeville, by the way, is now Lake Success.
