Vanderbilt Cup Races

Left to right we have: Willie K. Vanderbilt and his wife Rosamund; Robert Huntington and his wife Edith (Edie). The photo was probably taken in February, 1937 at the airport in Mendoza, Argentina during their South American tour which lasted from January 18 to February 11, 1937. The plane is Willie K.‘s Sikorsky S-43 Seaplane which was piloted by Earl F. White although both Huntington’s (who were pilots) and Willie K (who was not) had some time at the controls. Since the Vanderbilt’s had railroad money and there were several Huntington’s that made millions from railroads (Henry E. Huntington - Pacific Electric RR and Central Pacific RR; Collis P. Huntington & Archer M. Huntington), I’ll guess Robert’s fortune came from railroads also.

I was there also and 19 at the time. tried to get my father to bid on the first car up, the Murphy beverly Berlin. No luck. I bid on the type 35 bugatti. I had $1,528. not enough and again no help from dad. A great guy but too conservative.So life goes.
I still have the origional sales brochure and news paper articles from that sale.
It was truly an epic adventure, I retell often.

William K. Vanderbilt Jr, his wife Rosamund, and friends Edie and Robert Huntington flew around the rim of South America in Vanderbilt’s Sikorsky S-43 seaplane – from January 18 to February 11, 1937.

Second thoughts.  Methinks the captions of “Lancia finishing the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race ahead of Tracy’s Locomobile” and “Tracy driving the Locomobile pass {sic} the parked Lancia” may have been swapped [“past”, by the way].  Sam, III

Terrific job done by Ellyn organizing this event - so many moving parts which I was glad to be a part of.  And a shout out to Bobby for his work before and during the event.

I especially liked being able to combine two passions of mine - the Motor Parkway and Amateur Radio.  And while atmospheric conditions were not ideal for ham radio, contacts were made with hams in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and NY. 

It was great seeing the community involved and the support provided by the police in all three counties.  And what a dedication ceremony!  Bravo!

Guessing, the #4 looks closest to the 120hp Fiat driven by Vincenzo Lancia in the 1905 VCR race. This photo must’ve been taken before Lancia’s accident with Walter Christie during lap 4. As expected, Lancia took the lead early in the race. Perhaps they used his Fiat, the crowds favorite car, to announce the start of the race by the Mineola grandstand.  If correct, Lancia is driving, Mechanician Alissa is sitting on the rear spare tire, and in the passenger seat with bull horn is NOT Willie K. Curious to know if anything above is correct.

Not only do these posts satisfy my LIMP, auto, and LI history interests, they also strike home every so often, especially since I’ve lived in Mineola and Westbuty, only blocks from the LIMP and VCR RsoW.  I’ve spent many hours in the Bach BSS, on my own, with my kids and their cousins, and with my grandkids, and never realized the connection.  [Funny, I got my own BSS from Adelphi!]  Sam, III

This was a great time even with the weather issues. I loved seeing the old cars (1908 RR and Model A club cars) and meeting some of the HAMs. Saw some interesting mobile radio tech.

Hope someone posts some pictures, maybe he took shots of some of the more modern older cars.

My son Christopher and I enjoyed this event entirely! The Ham Operators are true professionals. Couldn’t help but smile upon the classics arrival in Ronkonkoma ( Alco included ). Ellyn Okvist’s words of dedication are a testament to her passion.
