“Black Beast” Roars on Fifth Avenue at the Museum of the City of New York

Two nights ago, the Alco "Black Beast" lit up Fifth Avenue as part of the Museum of the City of New York's first 2010 "Speakeasy Night". Check out the fire coming out of the exhuast pipes in this two-minute film. Speakeasy guests, museum staff and families in the community all gave the "Black Beast" a big thumbs up: (4 comments)

The Italian Team for the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race

The Italian Team for the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race consisted of five Fiats. The team represented the Automobile Club of Turin and was managed by Fiat's American agents, Hollander & Tangeman. Three of the drivers were prominent Italian racers selected by Fiat; Vincenzo Lancia, Felice Nazzaro and Emanuel Cedrino. Hollander & Tangeman selected the other two drivers, Louis Chevrolet and Paul Sartori. Fiat proudly promoted the team in this poster. (0 comments)

A Research Challenge: The 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile on Austin Clark’s Roof

Don M. has emailed this research challenge to the many fans of the Long Island Automotive Museum: "Do you have have any information about the history of the 1902 Curved Dash Oldsmobile that was on the roof, over the front door of the Henry Austin Clark Museum entrance? I am trying to find out the vehicle history prior to Austin selling the vehicle in 1965. I'm currently at a dead end with my research, so I hope you will be able to help me". (1 comments)

Then & Now: The American Locomotive Company Plant in Providence, Rhode Island

The American Locomotive Company, often shortened to Alco, was created in 1901 with the merger of eight locomotive manufacturers including the Rhode Island Locomotive Works located in Providence as seen in this photo. In the early 1900s, all the company's locomotive manufacturing was moved to Schenectady, New York and all the other plants were closed. Alco, now based in Schenectady, became the second largest steam locomotive builder in the US and went on to build the famous "Big Boy"… (2 comments)

Postcards from the Long Island Automotive Museum (#7-11)

The Long Island Automotive Museum offered a wide array of related merchandise including; jewelry, label buttons, photos, model car kits, china and series of postcards. As described in this brochure , provided by Walter McCarthy, there were at least four series of postcards published featuring the cars of "Henry Austin Clark, Jr. and other noted collections". Then & Now: The Railroad Bridge on Ellison Road in Westbury

One of the most spectacular vantage points of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race course was the Long Island Rail Road Bridge on Ellison Road in Westbury. Drivers mounting the sharp grade of the bridge would often find the wheels of their cars lifting off the road as if they were about to launch into flight.
