    William K. Vanderbilt Jr- “Un Millionaire Recordman” and Auto Race Driver

    From 1902 to 1903, William K. Vanderbilt Jr. traveled throughout Europe. Here he found magnificent open roads to drive as fast as he dared and an education in the new sport of automobile racing. On May 2, 1902, he set the world’s kilometer record in a 40-horsepower Mercedes, averaging 110 kilometers per hour or 68.4 mph. He was hailed in the French magazine La Vie Au Grand Air as “Un Millionaire Recordman.”

    Never Before Published Vanderbilt Cup Race Photos from a 1904 A.L.A.M. Scrapbook

    On Friday, October 7, 1904, the day before the first Vanderbilt Cup Race, superintendents and engineers of the Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers (A.L.A.M.) gathered for a 65-mile "meet" covering Manhattan, Bronx and Westchester. At 10:00 AM, 17 cars lined up in front of the Locomobile headquarters, at 76 Street and Broadway in Manhattan.     An Armband Discovery and a Lantern Mystery

    Since 2008, I have been searching for a Vanderbilt Cup Race brassard (armband) reportedly found in the historic Malcolm House. As seen on the arm of William K. Vanderbilt, Jr, officials and press wore these distinctive armbands to allow access to the course. Last week my search for the Malcolm brassard took me to the archives of Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums. I was not disappointed!
