Was the “Man in the Leopard Coat”  the Inspiration for Jay Gatsby?

One of my favorite 1904 photos in my Vanderbilt Cup Race book showed this fashion conscious group of men. My caption began: "In the custom of the day, the crowds typically wore their finest clothes to great public events such as the Vanderbilt Cup Race..."

VanderbiltCupRaces.com Exclusive: Rare View of a Vanderbilt Cup Race in Bethpage

As a follow-up to our recent discussion of the public roads of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, I recently acquired a copy of this rare photo of a Vanderbilt Cup Race...which came with no captions or notes. I have seen thousands of photos of my favorite races, but never from this location. It was my task to identify the action for the copyright holder. Here goes:

Louis Chevrolet and the End of the Long Island Vanderbilt Cup Races

Chevrolet’s steely-eyed focus shown in 1905 and 1908 was noted by William Durant, chairman of General Motors, who wanted to promote Buicks through auto racing. By 1909 Durant hired both Louis and younger brother Arthur. Both worked on the cars, but Louis joined Lewis Strang and Bob Burman, men with all-out driving styles similar to Chevrolet, as teammates.

Five More Vanderbilt Cup Race Photos from the Pickering Collection

Our examination of her grandfather's photo collection revealed several Vanderbilt Cup Race photos, many never published before. In an exclusive to VanderbiltCupRaces.com, five more race photos are being posted from the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race courtesy of Catherine Pickering.

Guy Frost’s Favorite Vanderbilt Cup Race Photo

Guy Frost, chairman of the Vanderbilt Centennial Celebrations, has selected this photo as his favorite Vanderbilt Cup Race image. Taken during the 1908 race, referee William K. Vanderbilt Jr. is seen discussing the action with retired driver Joe Tracy. Joe drove in three Vanderbilt Cup Races (1904, 1905 and 1906) and two American Elimination Races (1905 and 1906).

A cup of coffee at the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup

The Vanderbilt Cup Races attracted all types of entrepreneurs to Long Island. Farmers sold parking spaces for $25, while hawkers sold trinkets, pennants and programs for 25 cents. However, the busiest temporary store is shown here, where spectators could purchase coffee for 5 cents a cup.
