    In response to criticisms about the 16 curves of the 1936 Vanderbilt Cup Race course at Roosevelt Field, the circuit tor the 1937 race was revamped to encourage faster speeds and make the American cars more competitive.

    This one-minute film highlights Bernd Rosemeyer's victory at the 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race at Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury, New York. Rosemeyer drove an Auto Union Type C averaging 82.564 MPH over the 300-mile race.

You can clearly see the beginning of the word ITALY above one of them. Can you explain why "Australia" appears on the door in the background of a 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Race photo that I found on the web?"

    From the Drennan Collection: The Roosevelt Raceway Bar & Restaurant

    For the 1936 and 1937 Vanderbilt Cup Races, a former huge hangar for Roosevelt Field was converted into the Administration Building for the new Roosevelt Racway. As shown in this 1936 aerial, the buidling was located south of Old Country Road and behind two grandstands. Glass negatives from the Drennan Collection provide insight into one use of the building.

    A Treasure Box of Long Island Auto Racing Discovered by the Cradle of Aviation

    Last month the Cradle of Aviation Museum received a gift of the photographic archives of a man long-associated with Long Island aviation. Among the hundreds of photos in the collection was one box of 265 negatives and glass plates related to Long Island automobile racing.

    George Vanderbilt Cup Race Tickets and Passes

    Dave, your father likely used this ticket to attend the first George Vanderbilt Cup Race held at Roosevelt Raceway on October 12, 1936. The race was won by the great Italian Tazio Nuvolari, seen here receiving the huge trophy from Willie K's cousin, 22-year old George Vanderbilt III.
