    Old 16 Rides Again In Dearborn: September 2008

    For the 58th Annual Old Car Festival held September 6th & 7th, 2008 held at the Henry Ford, Old 16 was brought out and driven for the last time before being permanently retired to static exhibit according to the Youtube description.

    Guy Frost’s Favorite Vanderbilt Cup Race Photo

    Guy Frost, chairman of the Vanderbilt Centennial Celebrations, has selected this photo as his favorite Vanderbilt Cup Race image. Taken during the 1908 race, referee William K. Vanderbilt Jr. is seen discussing the action with retired driver Joe Tracy. Joe drove in three Vanderbilt Cup Races (1904, 1905 and 1906) and two American Elimination Races (1905 and 1906).

    Many great pieces of art have been created based on the exciting Vanderbilt Cup Races, most notably by the wonderful artist Peter Helck. One of the most unusual works of Vanderbilt art is this tin can painting by David Wasserman.

    On April 13, 2009, I attended Opening Night at Citifield- the new home of my beloved New York Mets (see my brief highlights film). After a fun evening and another tough loss, I wondered if it is possible to link the New York Mets to the Vanderbilt Cup Races. Here is my best six degrees of separation.

    Old 16 at the 1952 Bridgehampton Road Race

    To help promote the 1952 Bridgehampton Road Race, owner Peter Helck and his son Jerry Helck brought Old 16, the winner of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, to the course. Joe Tracy, who drove in the 1904, 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races, can be seen in the driver's seat. Peter Helck is standing to the right of the Locomobile wearing his trademark beret. This previously unpublished photo was provided by Jerry Helck, who can be seen standing to the left of Tracy.

    Linking the Vanderbilt Cup Race Course from Ellison Road to the Motor Parkway

    The fourth set of 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race photos from the Hayden Allen Collection focuses on a stretch of the course that connected Ellison Road with the Motor Parkway just west of Merrick Avenue.

    Old 16 at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours

    Old 16, the first American car to win the Vanderbilt Cup Race, made a rare appearance outside the Henry Ford Museum at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance last October. Conceptcarz.com has done another wonderful job documenting the event through photos and a summary article.

    The Beautiful 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race Poster

    For the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. commissioned a poster to publicize the race. The watercolor was painted by Jean de Paleologue who used the pseudonyn PAL. His PAL signature can be seen to the right of the front tire.

    The Locomobile Paperweight Cup and Radiator Mascot

    In celebration of their victory in the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, Locomobile offered miniature versions of the cup; a radiator mascot for $2.25 and a paperweight for $1.50.It was reported that Locomobile also provided special silver versions of the cup to the driving team and executives at the November 9, 1908 celebration in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
