Southampton’s James L. Breese and the Vanderbilt Cup Races
James Lawrence Breese (1854-1934) was a wealthy stockbroker and renowned amateur photographer with a spectacular country home in Southampton. Supported by a fortune made in finance at his firm Breese & Smith, his real passions were photography, art, automobiles, racing and architecture.

Film: The 1917 Match Races Among Oldfield, Chevrolet and De Palma in Sheepshead Bay Speedway
In 1917, three of the most famous daredevil drivers were veterans of the Vanderbilt Cup Races; Barney Oldfield (1914 & 1915), Louis Chevrolet (1905, 1908, 1909,& 1910) and Ralph De Palma (1911,1912, 1914 & 1915). On August 17, 1917, over 40,000 spectators came to Sheepshead Bay Track in Brooklyn to watch match races among the three drivers.

Then & Now: Krug’s Corner in Mineola
Krug's Hotel, on the north-west corner of Jericho Turnpike and Willis Avenue in Mineola, was a favorite viewing site for the 1904, 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races. This Then & Now look found a rarity- A building on the Vanderbilt Cup Race course that is still standing!

Driver Profile: Camille Jenatzy- “The Red Devil” and His Tragic Death
A Belgian race car diver, Janatzy broke the land speed record three times and was the first man to break the 100 km/hr barrier. He was nicknamed Le Diabo Rouge ("The Red Devil") for his color of his beard.

Born on February 5, 1882 in Pre-Saint-Gervais, France, Louis Wagner had a distinguished racing career lasting 24 years. His greatest victories were the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race with a 80-hp Darracq and the 1908 American Grand Prize with a 120-hp Fiat.
