    Starting Lineup: The 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race

    A large field of 30 cars raced in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race held on October 1, 1910. The race was run on the same course as in 1909- a total of 12.64 miles including 5.15 miles of the Long Island Motor Parkway.     A leading manufacturer of bicycles in the 1890s, the Pope Manufacturing Company began making automobiles at the turn of the century. Their cars were branded according to the location of the manufacturing plant and style; Pope-Robinson (Hyde Park, Massachusetts), Pope-Waverly Electric (1904-1908,made in Indianapolis), Pope-Tribune (Hagerstown, Maryland, 1904-1908), Pope-Toledo (1904-1909, Toledo, Ohio) and Pope-Hartford (1904-1914, Hartford, Connecticut).     Two nights ago, the Alco "Black Beast" lit up Fifth Avenue as part of the Museum of the City of New York's first 2010 "Speakeasy Night".
