A cup of coffee at the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup

The Vanderbilt Cup Races attracted all types of entrepreneurs to Long Island. Farmers sold parking spaces for $25, while hawkers sold trinkets, pennants and programs for 25 cents. However, the busiest temporary store is shown here, where spectators could purchase coffee for 5 cents a cup. (0 comments)

Look, up in the sky, it’s the space shuttle!

Okay, today's post has nothing to do with the Vanderbilt Cup Races, the Long Island Motor Parkway or even classic American cars in Havana. But, it is relevant to transportation!! (2 comments)

Old 16 at the 1952 Bridgehampton Road Race

To help promote the 1952 Bridgehampton Road Race, owner Peter Helck and his son Jerry Helck brought Old 16, the winner of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, to the course. Joe Tracy, who drove in the 1904, 1905 and 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Races, can be seen in the driver's seat. Peter Helck is standing to the right of the Locomobile wearing his trademark beret. This previously unpublished photo was provided by Jerry Helck, who can be seen standing to the left of Tracy. (0 comments)

The Alco Black Beast’s Last Great Race in 1911

The Alco-6 Black Beast Racer's last great race was the 1911 Elgin National Trophy Race held on the Illinois course. In the above postcard, driver Harry Grant and his mechanician George Babcock are shown prior to a practice run. This was the only major race in which mechanican Frank Lee did not ride with Grant. The reason was simple: Lee also drove an Alco in the race. Overall, three Alcos were entered resulting in a large team at Elgin. (0 comments)

Approaching the Merrick Avenue Bridge during the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race

Three of the 16 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race photos from the Hayden Allen Collection document the first Motor Parkway Bridge encountered by the drivers in the 1908 to 1910 races. I believe these photos are the only known images of the Merrick Avenue Bridge during the races. (2 comments)
