The Great Tazio Nuvolari in the 1936 Vanderbilt Cup Race

In 1936 the Vanderbilt Cup Races returned to Long Island with the new Roosevelt Raceway built in Westbury.The winner of the race was the great Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari in #8 Alfa-Romeo. His victory was captured in this exciting newsreel. (2 comments)

Garden City News “Quest Students are History Detectives”

As previously posted, I have been assisting 13 fourth and fifth graders of the Stewart School in their research of the Long Island Motor Parkway. On April 27th, the students and I explored the archives of William K. The Vanderbilt Cup: Up-Close on Long Island in 2002

In June 2002, the Smithsonian Institute loaned the Vanderbilt Cup for a Stony Brook exhibit The Crowd Goes Wild! Spectator Sports on Long Island- the last time this historic trophy was on Long Island. In addition to the cup, the exhibit featured Walter McCarthy's 1908 Simplex. Anderson Cooper’s Grandfather at the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race

CNN journalist Anderson Cooper's grandfather Reginald Vanderbilt was William K.Vanderbilt Jr's cousin. In this photo, Reggie Vanderbilt (second from the left) can be seen speaking to Willie K. at the start of the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race.
