    New Book from Howard Kroplick and Al Velocci “The Long Island Motor Parkway”

    The Long Island Motor Parkway made its appearance during a pivotal time in American history with the advent of the automobile. A daring enterprise at the time, it is unquestionably the forerunner of the modern highway system. Features such as the use of reinforced concrete, bridges to eliminate grade crossings, banked curves, guard rails and landscaping were all pioneered by the Parkway. For the first time, a book will be available documenting this pioneering parkway. (7 comments)

    The Lost Bridges of the Motor Parkway: The Wheeler Farmway Bridge in Queens

    When the 48 miles of the Motor Parkway were completed in the 1926, a total of 65 bridges had been built over and under the parkway. Most of the bridges were used to avoid intersections of major roads. However, many of the bridges were built to connect adjoining properties and farms. These "farmway" bridges were part of the negotiations when the Long Island Motor Parkway, Inc. purchased the right-of way.
