Great Neck Historical Society Presentation on Thursday, June 11, 2009
The Great Neck Historical Society will be hosting a presentation "Great Neck and Lake Success- Their Role in the Vanderbilt Cup Races and the Long Island Motor Parkway" on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at 7:30 PM in the Community Room at the Great Neck Library (159 Bayview Avenue).
Al Velocci and I will be the presenters focusing on the 1905 and 1906 races which went through this section of Nassau County, the Great Neck Lodge (as seen in the above Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum 1911 photo), the Motor Parkway Bridge over Lakeville Road and William K. Vanderbilt's Lake Success Deepdale estate. Following the presentation, Al and I will be signing our books; The Long Island Motor Parkway, The Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island, and The Toll Lodges of the Long Island Motor Parkway, and Their Gatekeepers' Lives.

I am looking forward to the presentation on June 11. I have read both of your books, which are quite fascinating.
Hi Ellie:
I look forward to seeing you there!
Howard
Hi Howard : I have enjoyed the book and the postings on this site . I have two questions for you . First, I think the photo of the Great Neck Lodge is terrific, but I cannot get oriented . From where was the photo taken, and is the LIMP to right of the lodge in the photo ? Also, where would Lakeville Road be in relation to the lodge as shown in the photo, and where would the LIMP bridge over Lakeville Road be situated ? Second, you mentioned, in response to a different question from someone else, that “ruins” of the LIMP exist on the grounds of the farmhouse west of Little Neck Parkway . I have searched that area exhaustively, but have not found any evidence of the LIMP on that property or at any other site on the land between Little Neck Parkway and Commonwealth Blvd . Would you be so kind as to direct me to the location of those ruins ? Thanks and regards, Neal Baker
Hi Neal:
Here is the orientation for the photo:

There is very little ruins of the Motor Parkway after the ramp west of Winchester Boulevard.
Enjoy,
Howard
