Sports Illustrated, November 10, 1962: Ford’s Big Plunge into Racing

One of the earliest mentions of the 1962 Holman-Moody Challenger III was this November 1962 issue of Sport Illustrated.

This "exclusive report" detailed Ford's plans to compete in races "from Indianapolis to Monte Carlos." Among the automobiles featured were the Shelby Cobra, the Mustang Sports Roadster and a "shortened, lowered, hot V-8 engined, fastback model Challenger III."
