Mystery Foto #29 Solved:  A 1910 Maxwell Model E Touring and a 1916 Overland Model 83 Touring from Professor Robert Kraft’s Family Album

Professor Robert A. Kraft needed your assistance to identify these three automobiles from his grandfather's photo album.

Answers to Mystery Foto questions:

Dr. Kraft: I believe that photos B and C depict the same car, with interesting rectangular designs under the doors. It also has the CT plate 1799 that my great-grandfather Charles Somers Miller claims belonged to his cars from as early as 1915 (his journals are available online; he owned several Fords over the years).

The inscription on the back of one of the photos gives the date of the picture as 1911 along with the event location.

Identify the manufacturer, model and year for:

  • Mystery Auto A- 1910 Maxwell Model E Tonneau
  • Mystery Auto B/C-  1916 Overland Model 83 Touring

Car A is a 1910 Maxwell model E touring;
Car B and C are probably the same car, which is a 1916 Overland model 83 touring.

Mystery Foto #29… Just to clarify things car B and car C are the same car, possibly a Dodge Brothers touring car. That’s all I’ve got right now. Maybe more later

Wanted to share a watercolor painting I did recently. This art is based on a 95 year old B & W photo my father working on a Model T Ford. And yes I know the old story about Model Ts being available only in black but that is only half true. Early Model Ts were available in various color but not in black. Then in their midlife they were sold only in black because the paint dried faster (maybe true). In the later years of the “T” once again they were available in colors.

Beautiful painting! Proves that it’s easy to fix a Model T, all you need is a hammer.

Yes, I’m laughing at your comment, Al. I hope dad was just playing and posing for he camera. I hope he didn’t hit the poor old “T”.

Thanks for the help with identifying the old autos. G’ma’s albums have a few other such images of cars from about the same time (1910-20), if anyone is interested. All the pix are digitized.

Dear Robert, If you are interested in identification of these cars and if you want to share these photos on this website, it’s always a pleasure to be of help. Of course you’re also welcome to send them directly to my mail address (Howard will know this).

For openers, these from my Grandmother’s Albums

2. Same “1931” group of pictures

There are more, if anyone still is interested ....
