Mystery Friday Foto #31 Solved: The Long Island Aviation Country Club From Above
Frank Femenias challenged you to identify this Long Island Aviation Country Club aerial.
Identify;
- The two structures in the photograph and their purpose
These were the airplane hangar (Left) and the clubhouse (Right) for the Long Island Aviation Country Club.
- The location
The middle of the Hempstead Plains in the area then known as Island Trees, now Levittown.
- The road
A main stretch of the Motor Parkway ran along the southern border of the property.
- The likely date
A concrete apron in front of the hangar and a swimming pool at the clubhouse were added in the early/Mid 30's placing the date of this photo somewhere between May 1929 to July 1931.
- The aircraft the photo was taken from
This time period above represented the lifespan of the blimp that probably took the aerial- Goodyear Blimp NC10-A Mayflower. A photo of the Mayflower at the Long Island Aviation Country Club is posted in the same Alamy.com stock photo series as the Mystery Foto. It is also possible that the aerial was taken by the Goodyear Blimp Vigilant which visited the Long Island Aviation Country Club for an air meet on June 8, 1930.

Green Arrow- The Jerusalem Ave Motor Parkway highway bridge to the west of the club
Yellow Arrows- Remnants of the access roads to the grandstands for the 1908/09/10 Vanderbilt Cup races
Red Arrows- Remnants of where the possible 'pits' of the above Vanderbilt Cup Races existed.
Blue Arrow- Unauthorized entrance that the club was never supposed to have from the Motor Parkway. Note the same car in the current mystery photo as the 2016 mystery photo below.

These two structures are part of the Long Island Aviation Country club in what is now Levittown. The structure on the left is the hangar, the one on the right is the clubhouse.
The club sits just north of the Motor Parkway. The date is around 1929 because the pool and tennis courts are not up yet.
Those are the hangar and clubhouse for the Aviation Country Club airfield in Hicksville (now Levittown). The road is our beloved Long Island Motor Parkway. Since there is no evidence of an apron in front of the hangar nor a pool or tennis court, this photo was probably taken in 1929 or 1930, soon after it was built. The photo was probably taken from the Goodyear blimp NC 10-A “Mayflower” although some claim it may have been a different Goodyear blimp “Vigilant”.
