    The Drop Box Mystery at The Henry Ford

    Leslie Mio, Assistant Registrar at The Henry Ford, recently sent this email to me: "I am working on cataloging a sealed brass box. According to the donors (the Long Island Automobile Club), "These boxes . . . were used for signatures, so that Gentlemen Drivers, could not substitute Professional Drivers, in the Vanderbilt Cup Races." [letter to Henry Ford from Joseph F. Cox, Welfare Director, Long Island Automobile Club, dated January 15, 1936]. However, it seems more likely to be the drop box… (0 comments)

    1908 Locomobile Trophy Purchased for $128,700

    Two weeks before the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, driver George Robertson won the 200-mile Fairmont Park Motor Race with Irving Morse's 40 HP Locomobile. Robertson was rewarded with $2,500 while Morse (related to the Samuel "Morse Code" Morse) received a 31-pound, 3-foot sterling silver trophy "The Founders' Week Cup". On Sunday, this magnificent trophy was purchased for $128,700 by an unknown buyer at a Detroit auction. The purchase price was over five times higher that the $15,000-$25,000… (1 comments)

    The Beautiful 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race Poster

    For the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. commissioned a poster to publicize the race. The watercolor was painted by Jean de Paleologue who used the pseudonyn PAL. His PAL signature can be seen to the right of the front tire. (3 comments)

    Vanderbilia: The 1910 Cole Plaque

    I have an embossed shield with a pressed design on it that says "Massapequa Sweepstakes in Vanderbilt Cup Race Trophy 1910" with the embossing of what appears to be a trophy with a race car and driver on top and below the trophy it says "Won by Cole 30" 126.4 Miles Time 138 min 4.32 sec (6 comments)
