Saturday, October 25, 2008: Willie K. Talks!
It is a cold, misty Saturday morning here on Long Island. Very similar to the weather conditions on a Saturday morning 100 years ago on October 24, 1908 when George Robertson became the American driver to win the Vanderbilt Cup Race in an American car.
As a salute to William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., referee for the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, here is a link to highlights of a film “Over the Seven Seas” featuring Willie K. and his wife on a 1931 journey around the world in the Alva, his beautiful 265-foot yacht. It is the only known recording of Willie K’s voice.

“Over the Seven Seas”: A Film Starring William K. Vanderbilt II
William K. Vanderbilt II (Jr.), his wife Rosamund, his friends Mr. and Mrs. Earle Smith and crew set on a world cruise in 1931 aboard his beautiful 265-foot yacht Alva. They departed Long Island and traveled through the Panama Canal to the Galapagos Islands, the Society Islands, Samoa, Australia, Java, Bora Bora, Bali, Singapore, Ceylon, Arabia, through the Suez Canal to Cairo, Athens and Monte Carlo and westward across the Atlantic to America.

Old 16 Rides Again In Dearborn: September 2008
For the 58th Annual Old Car Festival held September 6th & 7th, 2008 held at the Henry Ford, Old 16 was brought out and driven for the last time before being permanently retired to static exhibit according to the Youtube description.

This film is the only known newsreel of William K. Vanderbilt Jr. In the newsreel, Vanderbilt watches the arrival of his new seaplane to his Fishers Island home in Florida in 1934.
2007 Vanderbilt Cup Race Centennial Celebration
Highlights of the 2007 centennial celebration of the Vanderbilt Cup Races were shown by WABC-TV. The event was held at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor on September 16, 2007.
1960 Cornelius Vanderbilt Cup Race
An attempt was made to bring back the Vanderbilt Cup Races to Long Island in 1960. The 75-mile race featured Formula Junior cars and was held in the parking lot of Roosevelt Raceway on June 19, 1960. The winner of the race was Harry Carter in a Stanguelini.

The 128-page book by Howard Kroplick, a researcher and lecturer on the races, contains rare images of the races from the archives of major museums, libraries and private collectors. The book Vanderbilt Cup Races of Long Island will be available from Arcadia Publishing in March 2008.
