Stewart School Blog “The Long Island Motor Parkway: Garden City’s Hidden History ”


Last week teachers Mr. Schultz and Mrs. Tesoriero took their 4th grade Stewart School class on a walking trip to explore the remnants of the Motor Parkway in Garden City. The trip was documented in this

blog post.



 

The students answered these two questions on the blog following the trip:

1) What is the most interesting thing you learned about the Motor Parkway?

2) Why is it important to know the history of the community you live in?


Here are the responses:


What is the most interesting thing you learned about the Motor Parkway? The most interesting thing that happened at the Motor Parkway was seeing what was left of the bridge. Why is it important to know the history of the community you live in? I learned that there was fewer cars, buildings, and fewer roads."


"The most interesting thing I learned was how some parts of the roads are still there. The highway is just North of Stewart School and you still can visit the highway.Its important to know aboutthe history about your community because teaches you interesting things before you moved into the community."


"The most interesting part about the Motor Parkway was that people from all over the world that are architects, engineers and drivers would come to study about Vanderbilt's design."


"The most interesting thing that I learned about the Long Island Motor Parkway was that the cement was still there from when they used it back in the 1900’s. It is important to know the history of your community you live in because you can pass the information to later generations."


"The most interesting thing that I learned was that there was a parkway near where the Stewart School was built. It is imporant to know the history of the community we live in because it helps us understand how and why it has developed and changed through the years."
