Another Historic Gem from the Pickering Collection: The 1909 Alco Black Beast
After viewing over a hundred vintage photos of Nassau County taken by photographer William Pickering in the early 1900s, Catherine Pickering and I found one more treasure last Wednesday: the "Black Beast"!
In this photo, the #8 Alco-6 Racer was photographed by William Pickering on Old Country Road in Hicksville on its way to winning the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race.

I have to wonder how many pictures my grandfather took of the races and other things that were lost over time. We’re fortunate to have them now and be able to scan them for the future. Best,Wallace
