Sunday, February 22, 2009: The Vanderbilt Cup Race Brassards
During every Vanderbilt Cup Race, all officials wore silk brassards (armbands) to allow them on the course. This latest acquistion to my Vanderbilia collection was a brassard worn by one of the race physicians who lined the course.
As seen here during the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race, even William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. wore his brassard indicating he was the referee. Also, note the goggles on his head. Willie K. was always ready to jump in his Mercedes and assist in any emergency during the races.
