Black Beast in the News

Sunday's Great Neck Plaza Autofest/Street Festival and the Black Beast were featured in the September 23, 2010 cover article of the Great Neck Record.

"Jay Corn, Great Neck Plaza Business Improvement District (BID) vice president and AutoFest committee chairperson is excited the car will be featured again this year. “The Great Neck Plaza BID is proud to have such an iconic car headlining our Autofest. Participation is always great at these events and I am sure all participating car enthusiasts will appreciate this exotic addition."

The Bridgehampton Historical Society has announced that the Black Beast will lead a parade of vintage cars around the original 4-mile loop as part of the 2010 Vintage Automobile Poker Rally on Saturday, October 2, 2010:

The Bridgehampton Historical Society’s annual Vintage Automobile Poker Rally is scheduled for Saturday, October 2, 2010 in celebration of Bridgehampton’s rich racing heritage. As many ‘autophiles’ know, the Bridgehampton area is steeped in racing history. Beginning in 1915, the Firemen sponsored street races as part of their summer carnival. Those races ran laps over a circular course that went east on Main Street, south on Halsey Lane, east on Paul's Lane, and back up Ocean Avenue to the monument. Homemade and modified cars piloted by local note-worthies like John Ambrose, Moosie Thompson, Court Rodgers and Norris Hopping put pressure on visiting racers as they reached speeds of up to 50mph.

This year cars built in 1959 and earlier are welcome – with some exceptions - to participate with an entry fee of $75. The route is approximately 60 miles long and will begin with a parade of cars around the original 4-mile loop led by a 1909 Alco-6 Racer known as “The Black Beast.” In addition to the poker element, participants will make stops at a number of historic Hamptons sites to answer trivia questions and potentially win another prize. Courtesy of the Bridgehampton Racing Heritage Group, our Engine Barn will also house a Bridgehampton Race Circuit exhibition for those who treasure memories of the Bridgehampton Track. Last but not least, at dusk a drive-in showing of the 1961 racing film, The Green Helmet, will be shown.

For more details and information, contact the Bridgehampton Historical Society at 631-537-1088 or [email protected].

The Fall 2010 issue of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Business Bulletin Magazine included an article "Black Beast" 1909 Alco-6 Racer returns to Toll Lodge". The articles reports that Cablevision's Bob Klement "had arranged with the Chamber to interview the Long Island Motor Parkway historians Howard Kroplick and Al Velocci for a piece on the Parkway for Cablevision's Neighborhood Journal to air on Cable's video 18".
