Sunday, September 27, 2009: Chicken à la King and the Vanderbilt Cup Races
The hometown favorite of the 1905 and 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Races was millionaire sportsman and Wall Street broker Foxhall Keene. Although proficient in auto racing, polo, equestrian riding, football and shooting, it was a food dish where Keene made his name. But first, let’s discuss Keene’s Vanderbilt Cup racing career.

Friday, September 25, 2009: Film “The Long Island Automotive Museum”
The place to go to view vintage automobiles, race cars and trucks in the New York area soon after World War II was Austin Clark’s Long Island Automotive Museum in Southampton. This amazing 5-minute film documents the opening of the museum on August 27, 1948 and a typical day at the museum in the early 1950s. The film was provided from the archives of the Long Island Old Car Club by Walter McCarthy and is being shown to the public for the very first time on VanderbiltCupRaces.com .

Our examination of her grandfather’s photo collection revealed several Vanderbilt Cup Race photos, many never published before. In an exclusive to VanderbiltCupRaces.com, five more race photos are being posted from the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup Race courtesy of Catherine Pickering.

William Pickering was one of the earliest Long Island photographers documenting many of the people, buildings and events in Nassau County including the Vanderbilt Cup Races. On Wednesday, Catherine Pickering and I examined her collection of photos and postcards created by her grandfather. The above unmarked photo of a car accident got our attention. Was the car a Vanderbilt Cup Racer? If so, which one and what happened? I promised Catherine, I would find out.
Thursday, September 17, 2009: Meeting the Granddaughter of a Vanderbilt Cup Race Photographer
Today I had a fascinating meeting with Catherine Pickering, granddaughter of William Pickering. As one of the first Long Island photographers, William Pickering shot scenes of the the Vanderbilt Cup Races from 1905 to 1910. Pickering would then sell these photos as postcards in his East Broadway Roslyn store.
