In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Long Island Motor Parkway and the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, an exhibit “Garden City’s Auto Racing History” will be presented by Howard Kroplick at the Garden City Public Library from September 29th to October 29th. The exhibit will feature rare images and memorabilia collected from museums, libraries, and private collections; including many from the Garden City Archives.

An exhibit of Vanderbilia from Howard Kroplick’s collection will be shown at the Nassau County Museum of Art from Friday, October 17, 2008 to Sunday, October 19, 2008 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The exhibit will feature the bronze Tiffany plaque given to driver George Robertson for winning the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race, program guides, banners, a 1905 poster and paintings by the prominent artist Peter Helck.

2007 Centennial Celebration of the Vanderbilt Cup Races at the Nassau County Museum of Art

On Sunday, October 19, 2008, the 5th Annual Centennial Celebration of the Vanderbilt Cup Races will be held at the Nassau County Museum of Art featuring timed demonstration runs and a Concours de Provenance for all entrants. The event will begin at 9:00 am with spectator fees of $10 per carload. For additional information, call Guy Fost at 1-516-621-2745. Click here to download the event brochure and registration form.

Can anyone identify the location of this 1914 photo showing a car near the Long Island Motor Parkway?

The car is adjacent to a sign that apparently reads ” To Parkway Inn, Lake Ronkonkoma via the Motor Parkway”. A smaller sign on the post indicates the direction to a company or store with the logo “AB”.

The September 14th Gymkhana and Concours at Roosevelt Field was enjoyed by participants and spectators. Over 50 cars participate in a fun event. Among the cars present were a 1902 Oldsmobile, a classic Rolls Royce, a 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H and a beautiful Packard.

Most famous of all the Vanderbilt Cup Racers, the victorious Locomobile of 1908 was the first American machine to win the race. Although the field for that event was far less prestigious than its predecessors, Americans heralded the car for its conquest of international competition.
