The Vanderbilt Cup On Long Island in 1933
From 1904 to 1916, the manufacturer of the winning car of the Vanderbilt Cup Races was allowed to hold the 30-pound silver Vanderbilt Cup for one year. The cup was usually placed on display at the company's exhibits and automobile trade shows. But, what happened to the Vanderbilt Cup after the races ended?
.From 1917 to 1934, the Vanderbilt Cup returned to its owner William K. Vanderbilt Jr. As shown in this rare photo, courtesy of the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum, Willie K. displayed the cup with his marine artifacts on the second floor of his home in Centerport, Long Island. Vanderbilt gifted the cup in 1934 to the Smithsonian Institution for their transportation exhibit.
For the last several years, one of America's great sporting trophies has been in storage and unavailable to the public. Someday, we hope the Vanderbilt Cup will return back to Long Island?
