A Tribute to Ray Jacobs (1919-2011)

Joe Scotchie has wrritten a wonderful tribute for Ray Jacobs in this week's issue of the Roslyn News. The article was based on a recent post on VanderbiltCypRaces.com including images and a sampling of comments:

Jerry R: “Really great! Beautiful tribute to Ray.”

Orin F: "Howard, I knew Ray for many years. I used to bring, to his Roslyn Hts Studio, my old books and magazines and he would make blowup photos of the vintage mansion photos for my collection. He would always tell me stories of his travels in the world, with photos, and his life as a boy."

Jack B:“Howard- I was saddened to learn of Ray Jacobs death. He was a wonderful gentleman. I met him at his studio a few years ago to ask him of any details he remembered of a photograph he had taken about 50 years ago. At that time he talked about disposing of his collection of wonderful historic cameras. He was a giant in the field.”

Bob Lang: "Howard,Ray and I shared an interest in Panoramic Photography—- We both used identical Cirkut Cameras built around the time your Alco was built. Over the last 25 years we got together often to take photos and just have fun. Ray always had those wonderful stories to tell and you never left him without a smile. He was just a great guy!"

Guy Frost: "“Ray will long be remembered through his photos. I hope the Bryant Library was the recipient of these.”

Johanna Zalkin: "Ray was my dad’s (Jerome Rose) first cousin. He was a wonderful person, a wonderful photographer. I phoned him frequently from my home in Indiana. Also, when I came to NYC I saw Ray as much as I could. He was a dear relative and I know he’ll be missed by me and so many others. Ray, I’ll miss you. Your cousin-Johanna."

VanderbiltCupRaces.com Exclusive: The Vanderbilt Cup Trophy Today and a Feedback Request

Feedback request: If you would like to see an exhibit of the Vanderbilt Cup trophy on Long Island, please leave a comment.

Walt Gosden: "Yes, let’s see the Vanderbilt Cup come back to Long Island for an exhibit, that would be absolutely wonderful."

Jim Barnes: "The cup should come back to LI and be housed in the Vanderbilt Mansion. How did it ever got to Wash DC anyway ???? How can it be transferred from a “storage” facility to a full time display ???"

Al Velocci: "Jim Barnes asked how did the Vanderbilt Cup get to D.C., Vanderbilt himself donated it to the Smithsonian in the early 1930’s. Can we get some of our elected representatives to petition the Smithsonian for permission to display the Cup some where on Long Island ? If security is an issue I’d settle for a location in the City. "

Tom Grant: "That would be terrific! Please keep us posted."

Guy Frost: "Please! We’d all love to see the cup. A reproduction existed here LI until the late 1960’s. This was awarded to the victor of annual runoffs held at the Bridgehampton circuit between the EMRA and SCCA clubs. I recall that the EMRA clubs usually won and may have been the owner/keeper of the cup. Perhaps a visit from the original cup can shake it loose from it’s unknown keeper for public enjoyment as a part of Vanderbilt’s contribution to motorsports on Long Island. "

David B Traver Adolphus: "If the Cup isn’t going to be on display at Smithsonian, it should be in New York State. "

Michael McCabe: "I think it’s a great idea to have the trophy on permanent display at the Vanderbilt Museum and perhaps they would loan it to you when you display the Alco 6."

Joseph (Motorpky) Debono: "Howard, This trophy is a work of art. It would be great if it came to Long Islan again."

James Elliott: " "I think it would be far more beneficial to have an exhibit of this cup on Long Island rather than in storage in Washington, DC. I also think it is important for the improved access to the cup which is an important link so much Long Island auto racing history."

Then & Now: Bulls Head Hotel on Northern Boulevard and Glen Cove Road in Greenvale

Michael Murtagh: "Great pictures! My family has lived in Greenvale since around 1910 and I’ve always been curious as to what the intersection and the Tavern looked like when my grandfather was a child. Thank you for posting them. I think your dates may be off for your pictures listed under “Then:2005.” I remember watching that fire department drill in the house next to the tavern and that had to be in like 1999 or earlier based on the age I was at the time. By 2005 the tavern building had been gone for a number of years and the brick building that replaced it had went through several occupants including Lester’s and Rockaway Bedding. I’m pretty sure in 2005 it was a Duane Reade. This link is an aerial shot of the area in the year 2000 and shows that the brick storefront that replaced the tavern had already been built.

Austin Clark Jr’s Sandy Hollow Fire Department Badges

Jon: "The picture of this fire truck has alot of history. It was originally from Islip Terrace Fire Dept. Long Island. This was Islip Terrace 1st motorized apparatus. It was sold toSleepy Hollow and then when Sleepy Hollow came time to retiring the fire engine Islip Terrace heard about it and purchased the unit back. This unit was fully restored and is still driven for parades and special events!! It can be viewed in our museum year around surrounded with historic pictures."
