Article “The License Plates of the Vanderbilt Long Island Motor Parkway”

In response to several requests to my E-Z pass post and with the permission of my favorite co-author Al Velocci, I am posted a pdf of the article "The License Plates of the Vanderbilt Long Island Motor Parkway" published in the Spring 2000 issue of the Long Island Forum.

This article provides the most comprehensive history of one of the most sought-after pieces of Vanderbilia. The many tidbits of information in the article include:

-The first year of the Motor Parkway plate

-The person who initiated the Motor Parkway license plate concept

-The total number of plates that were issued

-The first year that the plates were inscribed with "Long Island Motor Parkway"

-The four manufacturers of the plates

-The color combinations for the plates by year

-The plate number for William K. Vanderbilt, Jr. and his father

-The original owner of the #1 plate

-The Vanderbilt family members who were assigned #1 and #2 in 1922

-The two golf clubs that were assigned special plates

-The cost of the plates for the Motor Parkway in 1933

-The number of plates issued in 1937-the last full-year of the Motor Parkway
