Vanderbilt Cup Races

Tom, yes, Ray Harroun, winner of the first Indy 500 Race, drove a Marmon in the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race and the 1909 Wheatley Sweepstakes which ran concurrently with the Vanderbilt Cup Race.

In the above photo, Harroun can be seen driving his Marmon to victory in the 1909 Wheatley Sweepstakes, a race for smaller race cars.

December 24, 2009 Update: The Marmon was assigned the same number 32 in which he would later win the 1911 Indy 500 to promote the Marmon "Thirty-Two" 32-34 HP product line.

In the 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Race, Harroun drove the larger #21 Marmon, finishing 21st of the 30 cars entered. Joe Dawson finished second in the #25 Marmon.
